Le testament par Nevil Shute (CherylLonski)
CherylLonski: One is a work of fiction, the other is a biographical account. One author is male, the other female. One British, one American. Yet the stories intersect in interesting ways in their telling of a painful time in world history.

Somehow, I stumbled on this book over Christmas holiday 2021, while visiting my family back home.

Very inspiring, and strengthening for one's own walk with the Lord.

I thought of one of the missionaries from my church much of the time that I was reading this, since they were missionaries to the same area. I wonder if they knew each other.

I was sad when I found out that Mrs. Rose lived out her sunset years in the same state as I'm living in, but passed away more than a decade before I read her autobiography.

I highly recommend this for anyone going through struggles, and wondering: "Where is God in all of this?" ( )

Autobiographical story of a young missionary woman just before and during World War 2. The book begins with her arriving in the Dutch East Idies (Indonesia) with her husband on their first anniversary. We follow her for the next 8 years: learning the language, first white woman meeting tribes in New Guinea, hearing the news of war over the radio, evacuation, arrival of Japanese troops, intermittent camps, brutal interrogations, survival, and her return to the United States.
In the final chapter sums up the remains 60+ years of her life: remarried and returning the the islands as a missionary. ( )

Darlene Deibler Rose writes of her years as a Japanese prisoner of war during World War II in what is now the jungles of New Guinea. She tells of her Lord's faithfulness in the crucible of cruelty, suffering, and sorrow experienced as a young bride separated from her beloved husband. Told in the self-effacing manner common among the heroes of "The Greatest Generation", we are privileged to encounter this personal journey of a woman who began committing her story to paper ten years before publication for the sake of her sons because "I wished them to know, if ever difficult circumstances came into their lives, that their mother's God is still alive and very well, and His arm has never lost its ancient power!" Jonathan Carswell:
in our view Evidence Not Seen is the best missionary biography around.

Marketing blurb:
Evidence Not Seen follows one courageous woman’s story from the New Guinea jungle to four years in a Japanese Prisoner of War camp. Separated from those she loved, Darlene faced beatings and torment for a crime she did not commit. Yet despite the horrors of suffering, her future was secure. Her life was in God’s hands. This balances a moving account of faith with the love of a gracious God who cares, and is testimony to the way in which God upholds his people through the most difficult of times.

An old Roman coin was found on which was a picture of an ox, one of the servants of man. The ox was facing two things, an altar and a plough. The inscription read, "Ready for either."

To those servants of God who made the supreme sacrifice upon the altar of martyrdom in Japanese prisoner of war camps of in the fetid jungles of Borneo:

Rev. C. Russell Deibler
Dr. Robert A. Jaffray
Rev. W. Ernest Presswod
Rev. John F. Willfinger
Rev. Andrew Sande
Mrs. Helen Sande
Baby David Jerome Sande
Rev. Fred C. Jackson

And to those who put their hands to the plough of service for the Master, never looking back, surviving the imprisonment, deprivation, separation from and loss of loved ones, hunger, beatings, and rape, and bearing in their bodies the cost of following the Master wherever He led, until He called them home:

Mrs. Robert A. Jaffray
Miss Margaret M. Jaffray
Miss Lillian F. Marsh
Miss Margaret E. Kemp
Miss Philoma R. Seely
Mrs. Mary A. Dixon
Miss Grace M. Ditmar

To these, my beloved fellow missionaries, who loved me, guided me, and inspired me, the youngest missionary among them, I lovingly dedicate this book. Out of the past and from the distant shore, I hear them calling, "Run, Darlene, run! Run with perserverance the race that is set before you. It is worth it all!"
And so I run!

[Acknowledgments] More than ten years ago I began to write the story of my experiences during World War II or Bruce and Brian, my sons.
[Preface] Peace came to the Japanese prison camp at Kampili two weeks after it had been heralded in the highroads and footpaths, the boulevards and cobbled tracks of the rest of the world.
After six months studying the Dutch language in Holland, C. Russell Deibler, my husband, a veteran missionary, and I his young bride, set sail aboard the RMS Volendam, enroute to the Netherlands East Indies.
[Epilogue] Darlene Deibler arrived in Oakland emaciated and emotionally fatigued to be welcomed into her family's love and care November 30, 1945.
