Dirk Wildlight is found by Australian settlers in the middle of the night when he is 3 years old; tied to a stake and wild, unable to speak and liable to lash out. One of the farmers agrees to care for him but treats him rather like a wild dog than a person, making him chop wood in the forest everyday.
