My first impression is that this is the kind of children's book that seems aimed at adults. It's romantical, poetic, and almost feels nostalgic.

But, you know, I could see a little girl (maybe 5-9) really loving this book. It's fun to imagine all the crazy things you may get to do when you grow up (ugh, now I'm thinking about that Pussycat Dolls song). ( )

This book touched my heart because I am a Mom to a girl. I want her to dream of the possibilities that lay before her and this book shows a girl who does just that. I like the way the main character talks about her future plans and then connects them to what's going on in her current life. For example, she has visions of eating a fancy lunch with the president...but for now she has to eat lunch with her sloppy brother. The language used in this book is simple and easy for younger children to understand (around age 6-8 or older, in my opinion). Even though this book has a female main character, not all of the career choices she discusses are "girly" in nature. Still, this book probably wouldn't interest a male student. ( )

This book shows it's okay to dream about what you're life is going to be, but don't miss out on what is in front of you right now. I think this book is neat and it would be a great model to show kids that you don't always have to write with dialogue. There are many different ways to write books, and I think the diversity of the books I chose really would help students understand that. ( )

I absolutely loved, loved, loved this book! When we were children we had many different ideas of what we wanted to be when we grew up and we knew we could be anything we wanted. In this book, we see a little girl living out her childhood but also peeking into her thoughts of the future. When I was little there were so many things I wanted to be. I wanted to be a veterinarian, a doctor, an FBI agent, a nurse, or even a soldier in the military. Now as an adult I have narrowed it down to a child psychoatrist but as a child, I could be everything. This book really takes you back to your childhood days and you are able to connect with the girl in the story. I must also mention how wonderful and beautiful the illustrations are in this book. The illustrator, Rosie Winstead, used collage art to bring the story to life. This type of art has always been my favorite because you can do anything with everything to make a work of art. In the book, you can see where she decided to use collage and it's quite amazing how it helps the pictures feel real. On the first page, she uses a quilted material to make the sails on the boats and on the fifth page she uses a picture of a real ship and parts of real ocean waves. These tiny details add so much texture and contrast to the picture that was drawn by hand. For me, this book is truly amazing and I would say that it deserves the Caldecott Medal. I was mesmerized by the Illustrations and how they helped carry out the story. It is a book that makes you reminisce about your childhood and brings back the idea that you are capable of anything. "Someday" explores the options of what life can be for a child. Children have such an active and vivid imagination and the writing in this book captured the dreams of a young girl. It gave a wonderful message of what you can be someday and compared them to where you are today. I think that is such a great thing to teach young children. Sometimes no matter where you are you can be something great. ( )
