I was surprised with the somewhat heavy content of this book, but I did enjoy reading it. The first reason I liked this book is because of the realistic and dense plot. This book is about a family in the Midwest who live in a trailer park. One day, a tornado comes and sweeps away their home, including their baby sister Becky who was in her crib inside their home. The family and their friends set off around their town and in the fields searching for baby Becky everywhere. Finally, after a considerate amount of suspenseful pages, the young brother finds Becky asleep in her crib in the middle of a field, unharmed. Although they experienced a tragedy and lost their home, the family maintains a positive outlook because they are all together again. The plot deals with a real and frightening issue that takes place in the Midwest, which adds authenticity to the book and makes it engaging. The second reason I liked this book is because of the illustrations. The illustrations were detailed, but were made to seem like they were shaded with crayons, which added a cool feel to them. They weren't perfectly etched to show great detail, but they were still interesting to see on the page. The main idea of this book is that togetherness, whether with family or friends, is worth more than possessions at the end of the day. The final page of this book represents this perfectly: ‘But where are we going to live?’ I asked. ‘Together,’ dad said.” ( )

I am indifferent about this book for a few reasons. For one, I liked the illustrations because they added to both the tragedy and triumph that happened in the story. The illustrations helped to support the mood with the contrast between dark and light colors. While I thought the illustrations were good, I did not like the plot of the story as much. I thought that the story’s plot might have been too tragic for some students. I would be nervous to share this story with students who do not know what tornados are because they may become fearful that they will be caught in one. Although, if the students are in an area that does experience tornados, this story helps them relate. The end of the story is positive which may help these students feel more relaxed about living in an area with tornados. The big idea of One Lucky Girl is that even through the toughest times, people have others to get them through it. At the end of the story, the family lost their house but when the son asked his dad “where are we going to live?” His dad responded with, “together.” This shows how family sticks together no matter the circumstance. As a mother, I would have to say that this book terrifies me. It is a great book, and the fact that it is true could almost bring me to tears. A tornado strikes a little town, and tears apart a trailer park. When the family comes out after the storm they realize that someone is indeed missing from their family. This book is a rather good one! It keeps you wondering what is coming next. By the end of the book, I was counting my blessings, kissing my child, and saying why yes indeed that is One Lucky Girl. I recommend this book for sure. ( )
