i can't believe i read this book and liked it. i mean, are there unicorns? who am i? ( )

Well dang.  I wanted to like this.  What a neat idea, future magic... but after setting up glimpses of the world (Styrofoam is very rare and valuable for that reason), it becomes just another adventure story.  When the three kids sent the five highwaymen running, I gave up.  I don't like fantasy adventure, thank you.  Oh, and this is the first two of a four book series, and my library doesn't have the last two.  So, no.

I don't think I am the right audience for this book. It's hard to tell. I was intrigued by the concept, certainly, but the set-up failed to draw me in. I have a low tolerance for fiction about tragic losers who make good. But someone must like this because there's plenty of fiction out there with it. ( )
