THE LAND OF THE HEADLESS is set in a far future where mankind has taken his religious dogma and the divsions that result from it out into space. On a planet where society is shaped by a strict adherance to the word of God as laid out in the Old Testament and Quran a poet is accused of the rape of a woman. Found guilty he must face the punishment laid down in the Good Book; beheading. Beheaded, he is fitted with a neck valve, ordinator and basic sensory equipment and sent out into the world. But he bears a terrible and very visible stigma. the only way he can make a living is to join the army and serve in the war against the neighbouring planet. And plan his revenge against the man he believes is really guilty. LAND OF THE HEADLESS is a searing satire of religious fundamentalism, a novel of love and war and a study of self-delusion. It is an elegantly written, thought-provoking and unique SF novel.… (plus d'informations)

Amazing quirky book set in a future where beheading is a survivable punishment thanks to implanted sensors which enable people to function normally (well, almost) despite leaving their heads lying in the executioner's basket. There are obvious overtones of fundamentalist Islamic societies like Saudi Arabia where infringement of strict moral codes is punishable by death, or near death in this case. The whole book is both a morality tale and a mystery story, and sometimes wallows a bit in preachiness, but overall its ghoulish strangeness keeps the reader entertained. ( )

The olde language didn't do anything to improve the book. Interesting concept, but not as good as it might have been. ( )

A novel containing no sympathetic characters because its value lies almost entirely in the plot. Although this is hard sf, it is more of a satirical allegory than an adventure. The narrator has been beheaded by his fundamentalist government but religious 'compassion' has such criminals survive by means of a computerised brain and various prosthetics. In the mannered style of a nineteenth century first person novel, Roberts explores prejudice, religious fundamentalism , and morality with a facility of language that makes the reading easy while provoking serious thought. The premise is bizarre, the society well-drawn, and the characters believable; however, I found it unsatisfying. It wasn't the unsettling nature of the book I minded, but the feeling that it wasn't quite complete and didn't go as far as it could have. I plan on reading other books by him though, because I found it pretty compelling. ( )

Adam Roberts is an author whose books I prefer *having read*, to actually *reading*. Although his books are based on fascinating ideas and detailed in tightly written prose, his characters are unsympathetic to a man, and his worlds are bleak and depressing. Land of the Headless is no exception

Jon Cavala is punished for adultery by beheading, then fitted with a neck valve and an "ordinator" and sent back out into the world. This is the start of a layered meditation on truth and delusion; identity and prejudice; and death and humanity.

It's not an enjoyable read, but one read, it will stay in the mind of the reader far longer than most books. Just be sure to have something more cheerful to read afterwards. ( )
