A nationally known pediatrician and author addresses the question of why some youngsters make a successful transition into adulthood while others do not. Parents and schools often raise children in a highly structured world, leaving them unable to cope on their own. Dr. Levine urges that schools teach "life prep," equipping adolescents with what they will need to succeed as adults. He identifies these skills as "the four I's": inner direction, or self-awareness; interpretation, or understanding the outside world; instrumentation, or the acquisition of mental tools; and interaction, or the ability to relate to other people effectively. He offers advice for young adults who find themselves unable to navigate the world of careers.… (plus d'informations)

I read this book because someone left it behind in a vacation cottage we rented and I couldn't put it down, despite it not directly applying to my stage of life or that of my little one. Author Mel Levine clearly has a tremendous degree of experience and passion in this area of 20-somethings/"start-up" adults, but more than that page after page is filled with insights, thoughts, examples, and prescriptions, almost to the nth degree. The book wowed me in its completeness on the topic. Well-conceived, well-organized, well-written. Would recommend as a must-read if you have teen-aged children or 20-something children that are having a hard time getting started as adults. ( )

Not overly helpful guide in preparing a what the author refers to as "start-up adults" for the real world. Aimed at the transition from school (college) to work. ( )
