This is a wonderfully illustrated and written book with the tale of a self absorbed king who learns how to become loving and giving.
The King of Capri has eating habits that are gluttinous. Both his eating style and his manner of self importance change dramatically. When he falls in love his world changes, and as a result the kingdom benefits as well. ( )

A cute story with a lesson about being greedy and selfish. We liked the illustrations a lot too. ( )

One of the best children's picture books out there by one of the best writer's of (adult) fiction out there. The King learns a lesson, as we want all the selfish and shallow protagonists of children's stories to do. His lesson is a truly meaningful one, with implications for a more just and generous society, but Winterson's tone is never preachy. Told with an engaging fable-like style with gorgeous illustrations, The King of Capri is a genuine treat, a kids' book that grownups will also enjoy. (And bonus: It features a MATURE love story for a very refreshing change!) ( )

A good story to read to children before they sleep. It is about the King of Capri, who was very rich and lavish in his food styles. One day he decided to clean his own garments that were soiled by his delicious food. Then, at night, a wind came and blew his clothes to a very poor wash lady named Mrs. Jewels. Mrs. Jewels had a cat named Wash who was very thin and starts to eat what the wind brings from the King of Capri. This wind made the King poor and Mrs. Jewel's rich. Pushing his pride away, the King of Capri decided to see the Queen of Naples where everything good is there. It was like a blessed community, the community of Mrs. Jewels. That wind was definitely in their favor. The Queen of Naples turned out to be the once poor Mrs. Jewels. One of the king's wishes in the beginning of the story was to eat with two mouths (meaning to have a partner, one he already owned, the other, his partners). Here he proposes to the Queen, and says his mouth would be the second. At this point, whatever the wind misplaced was returned at their marriage. ( )

What a beauty, both in language and in illustration. A good, short, fantastical story that draws some attention to what it is to be poor and what it is to be rich. I would yearn for a different ending, IF the author was not Winterson, but for Winterson a very unusual ending, so perfect for the story. ( )
