I found this fantasy on what may have spurred the first cave painter to be believable and warmly told. The illustrations are gorgeous, the narrative plausible and the research well-documented. There's so much that we can never know, and Lasky acknowledges this with grace while offering up the portrait of a young shaman doing her best to bring rain. Highly recommended. ( ) Mishoo has forgotten the rain, "its sound, its shape, and how the water clouds gather like herds of woolly mammoths in the east." Without rain, the plants and animals all died. Now, Mishoo, the Dream Catcher, needs to find a way to help her people. We see Mishoo enter a cave, and begin to draw with "a charred stick from the fire." After days of drawing, Mishoo rejoins her clan, and it begins to rain. Readers learn that the plants and animals return, and her people are healthy again. Kathryn Lasky wrote a powerful story. We read about Mishoo's personal struggle, and how everyone depends upon her. Mishoo tells us that babies have been born and grown into little walkers and never seen rain." Her mother died, "trying to catch a dream of rain." Her younger sister "is so thin her wrists are like twigs." Lasky's words convey the urgency that Mishoo feels. The books illustrations, created by Rocco Baviera, are a combination of watercolors, raw earth pigments, charcoal, bear grease, animal fur, and plaster. They are very dark, and the colors are shades of deep red and deep orange. When we see Mishoo's face, before the rain comes, she looks tragically pained and full of sorrow. Her eyes are hidden behind dark shadows. In the cave, without seeing her face, we see Mishoo come alive, and become inspired. Her cave paintings look like actual cave paintings, and are strong and full of life. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
