The convoluted story of how the Conqueror came into (short) existence. A few jarring typos mar this excellent technical history of the tank and its numerous proposed and two production variants. ( ) Rather more than just a technical study, though there is plenty of nuts-and-bolts detail, what Griffin especially brings to this story is his ability to capture the flavor of the time when these vehicals were deployed. If I have to mark this book down for anything, it's that Griffin occasionally adopts a flippantly dismissive tone that I'm not sure is always appropriate to the subject matter, even if I sort of agree with the point being made. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
The Conqueror was the British Army's first successful big gun tank. Designed to take a 120mm gun to enable it to deal at long range with the Soviet JS3, its role was to support the lesser armed Centurion infantry tanks. In this work, Rob Griffin tells the story of the design, development and operational use of the Conqueror. Topics covered include: detailed specifications; the second-line use of the Conqueror; and the fates of all examples. There are photographs and drawings.
