The People's Bible Commentary is just what the name implies -- a Bible and commentary for the people.
The only thing we know about the prophet who wrote this little book of three chapters is the information he gives us in the opening verse. His name is Nahum. Neither he nor anyone else with the same name is mentioned in any other place in the Bible. (Nahum)
Those readers who use computers for word processing know that one function of such programs allows the computer to check your spelling. ... If the computer can't recognize the word ... the message "No Suggestions" will appear on-screen. That's exactly what happens when you type the name Habakkuk into a computer -- you get no suggestions. The name is equally strange to present-day Christians. ... The message of the book, unfortunately, is as unfamiliar as his name (Habakkuk)
Zephaniah is one of those biblical writers about whom we know very little. We don't know where he was born or where he lived. (Zephaniah)

The final group in Judah that the Lord confronts through Zephaniah might best be labeled as "the indifferent." These people grew up in God-fearing families. They had been taught to trust in the Lord and to serve him, but something happened as they went out on their own. They got caught up in their day-to-day lives and in the world around them. Pretty soon they found that (they) didn't have any time for the Lord -- nor were they interested in making time for him. They never actually rejected the Lord in just so many words. They just chose to ignore him. Zephaniah speaks of them as "those who turn back from following the Lord." We would probably call them backsliders or apostates -- people who turn their backs on the Lord after once following him.

The closing words Nahum uses to describe Nineveh and the works of men: "endless cruelty." The final words that we can use to describe the Lord and his works: "wisdom and love." (Nahum)
God's ways may appear strange to us, even unjust, but if, like Habakkuk, we will let God explain them to us we too will find cause to rejoice and praise him. (Habakkuk)
Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him Glory! (Revelation 19:6,7) (Zephaniah)
