Assignment to convoy duty is usually boring. However, one ship, the Topaz, is carrying extremely important passengers, including a beautiful young woman. After attack by privateers the convoy encounters a hurricane and is broken up. Are we surprised that the Triton and the Topaz wash ashore near the same small island? Plus a rumor of buried treasure and the continued vendetta of Rear-Admiral Goddard leading to yet another court=martial in Jamaica.

This is the fourth in the Ramage series with a very boring start. The first chapter was a complete loss and the second was a synopsis of previous books. He seems to have vague memories of his loved one and in his heart he has a willingness to be unfaithful. Throughout the whole book the articles of war are continually repeated and a court martial is never far from his mind. And of course he loses another ship.
The book is lacking a story, going from one event to another, finally settling on a hunt for buried pirate treasure. The direction for finding the treasure is a bit far fetched. At the end, he finally has his long awaited court martial. ( )

Lt Ramage is assigned to help escort a convoy to the Caribbean, on the way they get hit with a hurricane! Oh, there's another beautiful young woman, who knows Gianna...a girl in every port? ( )

Dudley Pope's Ramage series is like comfort food...so satisfying when all else feels like it is falling apart.

"Governor Ramage R.N" has it all: problems with a vendetta, fight with a French privateer, hurricane, shipwreck, treasure hunt and court marshal. This is just the bare bones... there are details that grab you... make you laugh, cry and hold your breath.

This is not a one character book. The whole ship is full of characters that contribute to the story in their own wonderful way.

I am four books into the series plus a couple that are out of order.
I am having fun searching through used book shops for the fillers. The hunt adds to the pleasure since otherwise I would just binge on all those books to come and that would spoil things. You must read them in order...Ramage grows in character and there are flashbacks to contend with if you read at random. ( )

Excellent series, sometimes based upon actual events. Always a good story with interesting characters, puzzling quandaries and sometimes quirky solutions. Age of sail tyros should read early in their literary questing for his knowledge and insights into fighting, sailing and British Navy life during these quite fascinating times. Many set in the Caribbean where Pope lived for most of his writing career enabling him to provide very helpful maps, not often found in fiction, for his scenarios.
A hurricane dismasts two small ships causing them to be cast upon a small Caribbean Island. Crusoe like challenges and opportunities, like pirates treasure, abound.. ( )
