"The Vegetables We Eat" by Gail Gibbons is an informational picture book all about vegetables: the definition, their different parts, different kinds/categories, how to grow them yourself, how to grow them on farms, and how they go from farms to the grocery store. This text is long (32 pages) and I think that it could be used in a variety of ways. First of all, there is scientific vocabulary used throughout the text; I think it would be great to go through the book and see how the text helps us to define new words, or words we have heard before but haven't have a scientific definition for, like vegetable. Due to the length and different sections of this text I think would be helpful to work through it one chunk at a time. At the end of the book students could write and/or draw about the life-cycle of a plant. Additionally, when learning about the different types they could compare and contrast the types of plants and practice identifying them using what they have learned and how the text has defined them. This text could also be used as a starting point to discuss what plants need to survive and if possible you could do an experiment growing a plant, or multiple plants, as a class. There is another book by the same author called "The Fruits We Eat" that could be used in similar ways. This book explains the different parts of vegetables and fruits as well as the different kinds there are. The book also shows many different ways that we eat vegetables and fruits. Lastly, in the book, the author writes about how to maintain a garden to grow vegetables and fruits. Ages 3-5 Source - Pierce College Fort Steilacoom Library aucune critique | ajouter une critique
