This is a book of non-rhyming poetry that depicts beauty in landscapes. In the book the author has poems from deserts to beaches to the moon. All of the poems are short yet describe the scene in detail, and have a great vocabulary for younger audiences.
Personal Reaction:
I think this book beautifully describes the pictures in a way that younger children with some vocabulary introduction can really see what poetry is. Most children and even myself think of poetry as always rhyming, and this book acknowledges that that isn't always true. I like most about the book that she has many different poems about different landscapes. I think this would help students find the beauty in all places and also make them wonder about where they haven't been; such as the beach or mountains.
Classroom extension:
1. Before reading this book aloud with my class I would go over new words and add them to our word wall, and make sure that students knew the definition of the word the way it was being used. Thus using the book to tie into our new vocabulary words.
2. After reading the book aloud to the class I would have them pick a place and have them then write a poem about it.
3. Lastly, after writing the poem I would have the students draw a picture of the place they chose.
