To Wake the Dead
Crooked Hinge
The Blind Barber
The Case of the Constant Suicides.
The Blind Barber is one of my all-time favourite JDC books. I know most people vote for The Three Coffins, but this screwball comedy of 1934 has made me giggle since I read it for the first time in the 1960s. Set on a transatlantic crossing to England on the Queen Victoria, there is a murder and a set of quite sinister circumstances, but there is so much mayhem and comedic sheer bad luck, it's sometimes hard for the characters and the reader to stay on track.
The Case of the Constant Suicides would be my second favourite. Set in Scotland, with a Hound of the Baskervilles-like plot, it also has a lot of action and very funny dialogue.
The Crooked Hinge and To Wake the Dead are not particular favourites of mine, but no story written by Carr is ever not welcome.
A Christmas gift from my son in 1990 and kept & well-read since then. ( )
