"A fast-paced juggernaut of a story, where revelations pile upon revelations, building to a stunning conclusion that will leave readers clamoring for more." —James Rollins, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Sigma Force series
The accident came quickly. With no warning. In the dead of night, a precipitous plunge into a freezing river trapped everyone inside the bus. It was then that Army veteran John Reiff's life came to an end. Extinguished in the sudden rush of frigid water.
There was no expectation of survival. None. Let alone waking up beneath blinding hospital lights. Struggling to move, or see, or even breathe. But the doctors assure him that everything is normal. That things will improve. And yet, he has a strange feeling that there's something they're not telling him.
As Reiff's mind and body gradually recover, he becomes certain that the doctors are lying to him. One-by-one, puzzle pieces are slowly falling into place, and he soon realizes that things are not at all what they seem. Critical information is being kept from him. Secrets. Supposedly for his own good. But who is doing this? Why? And the most important question: can he keep himself alive long enough to uncover the truth?

Deep Freeze, by Michael C. Grumley, left me a little cold. John Reiff, the hero of this tale ifs caught in a bus accident that results in him being drowned in freezing river waters. He is brought back to life by a team of scientists after a prolonged period of being frozen. What seems like a short time to Reiff, is actually a twenty two year gap in his life. As Reiff gradually defrosts, he notices that the scientists supervising his recovery are very reluctant to answer any questions about what has happened to him. One scientist, Rachel Souza, does take a liking to Reiff and under his persistent questioning finally tells him he is a subject of an on going investigation into the possibility of extending human lifespan. By freezing subjects and restoring them at a time when they can be safely rejuvenated the scientists hope to be able to save people from life threatening diseases and other hazards. Reiff has a feeling that he is not being told the whole story. As it turns out he is right. The book spends an inordinate amount of time explaining the supposed scientific processes and tests that are performed on Reiff. So much so that the book seems to drag out the story. There is very little action in the first two thirds of the book. Some action does take place at the end, although it seems too little, too late. The ending left me feeling that the whole book was only an introduction to the character and that there was more to follow. I am not a fan of this type of writing. I like my books to give a strong story line and a conclusive ending, not a lead in to future books. This book was provided for review by Tor Publishing ( )
