Mirror Child Book One: The Woolgatherer, is a middle grade fantasy novel and the first in a series of books that explore the mystery and magic of the mirage and the nature of illusion. It's an American fairy tale, set in and around a gold mining town nestled in the canyons of the West. The story takes place during the Gold Rush; the main character is Faye Mirabelle. Faye is half-mortal and half fairy, born in pool of water in the desert and delivered to a gold miner and his wife as a gift from Falfurius, the Fairy King. Falfurius rules the Kingdom of Faerie, a realm hidden beneath the Earth and lit by the reflected light of copper, silver, and gold that exists under the ground. When mortals mined these metals, they stole the fairies' light. As the mining continues, Faerie grows darker and darker. So Falfurius sends mirror children to return the light. Faye's eyes absorb the light from the gold and hold its reflection, like a mirror, until she returns to the land of Faerie and surrenders it to the Fairy King. Faye knows nothing of her powers, nor of her destiny; She knows only that she is different from mortals and destined to live among fairies. Faye never fits in with mortal children, as she sees and interacts with beings from hidden realms, beings that emerge from the surface of rocks, where mortals might see only patterns. Faye leaves her mortal life and journeys through the Canyon of the Sun, a transitional place on her way to Faerie that is full of enchantment. On her journey, she is befriended by a sand fairy who is not what she seems, a mysterious woman in a cliff house, and a man called the Woolgatherer, who fuels the plot in surprising ways. When a castle materializes in air, Faye is lured to it, unable to resist its power. But Faye's journey-and its purpose-is not what she expects, and her time with the fairies puts her in danger of disappearing forever.
