It was an unforgettable scene. Dina Matos McGreevey, an attractive woman in her mid-thirties, wife, mother, and First Lady of the state of New Jersey, watched silently as her husband, then Governor Jim McGreevey, resigned his office with the revelation that he was a "gay American." The picture of grace and loyalty, perfectly composed in her pale blue suit, Dina Matos McGreevey gave no sign of the tangled mixture of fear, sorrow, and anger she felt that day, no hint of the devastation that was to come. Since then she has been asked repeatedly about the nature of her marriage, about what she knew and when she knew it. Since then, she has remained silent--until now. Speaking up at last, Matos McGreevey here recounts the details of her marriage. What emerges is a tale of love and betrayal, of heartbreak and scandal, and, ultimately, hope.--From publisher description.… (plus d'informations)

I borrowed this book from the library and was very impressed with it. Ms. McGreevey is an everywoman - in this story, a woman who loves the political process and falls in love with a man who climbs the political ladder. She is with him every step of the way. She must have boundless amounts of energy. Her story is told in simple detail and with much honesty. Since Ms. McGreevey knows that we all know the ending to the book, she refers to certain instances in her courtship and marriage that are odd but can be explained away as "just how he is" or "he's in the middle of a campaign." She writes honestly about hindsight and her deep pain. It is through hindsight that she sees the fallacy of her "voice of reasonableness," the one that explained away what she sees now were red flags. The absolute shattering of her world is poignant and detailed. I would hate to have to go through what she has been through. She seems to have compassion for herself, and shows at the end how she is picking up the threads of her life. ( )

This was an excellent book, albeit a sad one. This poor woman endured much pain and humiliation after believing she was married to her Prince Charming. It was scary to think how someone (her husband) could lead such a scandalous double life. This book will make you think carefully about who you choose as a life partner. ( )

Having read her ex-husband's account of his "coming out" as gay, I was curious to hear her side....the courtship and marriage of Dina McGreevey, the ex-wife to the now ex-governor of New Jersey, Jim McGreevey.

Parts of it were a fairy tale story....the glitz and the glamour. Parts of it would have been indicative of problems if the author knew how her life was going to be. Her ex-husband was secretive, avoided intimacy, and had a need to micromanage.

When he came out, it was not so much with his sexuality being an awakening to him, but as a defense to a sexual harrassment suit that was being made against him.

While the author does not refer to McGreevey's past, he by his own admission in his confession, states that he has acted on these feelings since he was a young adult.

The author is a strong woman with her heart and mind in the right place. Through her description of what happened you can see the importance of a good support system of friends and family.

I found this book frank and sad, but her strength uplifting. ( )
