This memoir is a well written account of the exciting adventurous life of two young adults from California who travel to distant locations in China on behalf of the YMCA in 1905 and soon experience the turmoil of the Chinese revolution (1911) swirling around them. This book was edited by their son, John S. Service who had his own adventures in China under General Stilwell. The inside of the cover has an excellent map using the city names from those early years of the 20th century. The footnotes contain interesting historical updates and suggestions for further reading. It's an excellent book for anyone interested in a ground level description of what life was like for those in the service of the YMCA in China. In particular I have enjoyed the very descriptive account of their wild adventures under fire on Yangtze River and riding the Rapids on the Min river. ( ) aucune critique | ajouter une critique
"(An) engrossing memoir .... To turn everything recorded here--births, an infant death, family uprootings, civil turmoil, maintaining an American household in the interior of China--into gold requires an alchemy that only a beautiful, strong-minded, witty and loving wife and mother can hold the secret to." --John Espey, Washington Post Book World "A wonderful, sad, moving memoir by an indomitable American . . . Golden Inches not only gives many fascinating glimpses of historical events; more important, it shows us what it meant to live through those events and deal with them without rancor, resentment or facile anger and enthusiasm." --Tracy B. Strong, New York Times Book Review "This closely observed portrait of living in isolated missionary communities and treaty ports, against the background of one of the most turbulent periods of twentieth-century Chinese history, is an important document. It is also a moving story of one family's obsessive and destructive love affair with China." --Tiffany Brown, Times Literary Supplement Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
