New York Times Bestseller

Jinger Vuolo, the sixth child in the famous Duggar family of TLC's 19 Kids and Counting and Counting On, recounts how she began to question the unhealthy ideology of her youth and learned to embrace true freedom in Christ.

When Jinger Duggar Vuolo was growing up, she was convinced that obeying the rules was the key to success and God's favor. She zealously promoted the Basic Life Principles of Bill Gothard,

  • fastidiously obeying the modesty guidelines (no shorts or jeans, only dresses),
  • eagerly submitting to the umbrella of authority (any disobedience of parents would place her outside God's protection),
  • promoting the relationship standard of courtship, and
  • avoiding any music with a worldly beat, among others.
  • Jinger, along with three of her sisters, wrote a New York Times bestseller about their religious convictions. She believed this level of commitment would guarantee God's blessing, even though in private she felt constant fear that she wasn't measuring up to the high standards demanded of her.

In Becoming Free Indeed, Jinger shares how in her early twenties, a new family memberâ??a brother-in-law who didn't grow up in the same tight-knit conservative circle as Jingerâ??caused her to examine her beliefs. He was committed to the Bible, but he didn't believe many of the things Jinger had always assumed were true. His influence, along with the help of a pastor named Jeremy Vuolo, caused Jinger to see that her life was built on rules, not God's Word.

Jinger committed to studying the Bibleâ??truly understanding itâ??for the first time. What resulted was an earth-shaking realization: much of what she'd always believed about God, obedience to His Word, and personal holiness wasn't in-line with what the Bible teaches.

Now with a renewed faith of personal conviction, Becoming Free Indeed shares what it was like living under the tenants of Bill Gothard, the Biblical truth that changed her perspective, and how she disentangled her faith with her belief in Jesus… (plus d'informations)

It was ok. It feels like a trailer for a movie, just enough to intrigue you but not the entire story. I have very little religious knowledge and even less of Bill Gothard. Jinger's story has me googling him, there has to be a cult book on this somewhere. ( )

I only saw a few episodes of the show the Duggars had as I haven't had TLC all the time. I knew they were conservative Christians, but not that they were involved in Bill Gothard's movement, for lack of a better word. I am glad she got out of it, as well as one of her sisters, and pray they all do. I saw Jinger on a show that Kirk Cameron does on TBN, so I got this book from the library, but I may have not been the target audience. I pray that those in IBLP will read this and leave it for a church that preaches the Bible. ( )

    Maybe 2.5?
    Boring, simplistic writing. ( )

When I started reading this book, I thought it would be a bio and an account of life in a religious cult. It was that, but it seemed like those were subplots. The many focus of the book seemed to be on religion and her feelings about religion. I felt I was attending church and being preached too. This subject matter just wasn't for me. Those who are religious may enjoy this book, but I was so glad when I finished it. ( )

This was the book I didn’t realize I needed to read and I’m so glad our library had it. I never watched the show she was part of, but the book was very meaningful for me as I can see how Gothard’s teachings (though I didn’t know of him) have penetrated a lot of mainstream Christianity (at least in America).

I suggest others not quit reading after a few chapters if the book is different than you expected. If you do, you will miss helpful nuggets and relatable aspects of her story throughout the entire book which I know kept me reading.

As someone who came out of a different type of false teaching, I related a lot to Jinger’s story and even how the false teachings she learned affected her and caused fear and legalism in her relationship with God and others, as well as her explanation of problematic Scripture application such as proof-texting, eisegesis, etc.

She also wrote about the performance mentality that affected her life due to being on TV, and social anxiety, which was very helpful to read about.

The book may feel like a dry read to some and have its critics, but the relatable struggles she shares and the truth of Scripture in the book will be truly freeing for those who like her have experienced similar things. ( )
