Practical, engaging account of how teachers can help adolescents develop new reading comprehension skills. Cris Tovani is an accomplished teacher and staff developer who writes with verve and humor about the challenges of working with students at all levels of achievement - from those who have mastered the art of "fake reading" to college-bound juniors and seniors who struggle with the different demands of content-area textbooks and novels. Enter Cris' classroom, a place where students are continually learning new strategies for tackling difficult text. You will be taken step-by-step through practical, theory-based reading instruction that can be adapted for use in any subject area. In a time when students need increasingly sophisticated reading skills, this book will provide support for teachers who want to incorporate comprehension instruction into their daily lesson plans without sacrificing content knowledge.… (plus d'informations)

I am teaching an undergrad course online and picked this up to see if there would be useful ideas for content teachers. It's going to be a little to apply, but yes, I think so. Most important is the idea of modeling. Specific examples and questions are provided. What I felt I could have used more of was 1. information on detecting reading problems in my students and 2. application examples over a wider range of disciplines and ages. ( )

This text discusses the problem many students face when it come to reading. It provides comprehensive strategies that teachers can use to help improve their students reading skills.

This is an appropriate text for future and current teachers. Reading a very necessary skill for all subject areas and this book give a break down of all the things students may struggle with and provides ways to help those students improve their skills.

Nice professional reading for teachers of all content areas. The work features great explanations, descriptions and application suggestions of reading strategies for adolescent students. These strategies are nothing radical new, but are excellently presented from a practicing teachers point of view. They are designed to engage the student and get them to think, appreciate and understand reading. Ready made templates that can be applied directly in the classroom are also included in the back. A great starter for the coming academic year. ( )

Tovani is a reading specialist who explains the problems many struggling readers have at the secondary level. She also sheds light on troubles more able readers can have when they tackle more difficult texts. She gives a number of examples from her own teaching and provides clear suggestions for helping students overcome their problems and become better readers. She makes it clear that becoming a better reader takes work, but we all know that it is worth the effort. ( )

Very specific and helpful for a pedagogical book. Lots of great ideas that I went and typed into my lesson plans right away. ( )
