Fiction. Science Fiction. Thriller. HTML:

Terrorism. Acts of oppression. The threat of nuclear war. What if one madman aboard a vessel could end these fears forever?

Commander Rochelle "Rocky" Jackson is aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan when the "unsinkable" naval vessel and its entire fleet are attacked from the depths and sunk. As Rocky struggles to stay alive, a monstrous mechanical steel stingray surfaces, plowing through the seas it now commands.

The US Navy??designed Goliath is a futuristic nuclear stealth submarine in the shape of a stingray. Simon Covah, a brilliant scientist whose entire family were the victims of terrorism, has hijacked the sub. Believing violence is a disease, Covah aims to use the Goliath and its cache of nuclear weapons to dictate policy to the world regarding the removal of oppressive regimes and nuclear weapons.

Could the threat of violence forge a lasting peace?

But there is another player in this life-and-death chess match: unbeknownst to Covah and the Goliath crew, the Goliath's biochemical computer brain has become self-aware??and it's developing its own agenda…

The crew of the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, soon learn to their dismay that nothing is entirely unsinkable. The nuclear powered sub that is as long as a football field and shaped like a stingray is pretty neat. There is another player on the field besides the sub, a computer, Goliath, that is planning carefully it's every move in the game. A very good story. ( )

Liked it, and was not surprised to read about the upcoming part two at the end. The story was well-paced, and enjoyable; it contained many inspirational quotes (some of which I highlighted - something I don't really do at all). Some twists were unexpected (always a bonus) and in all, not a bad book. Overall only three stars though, with an additional star for the quotes used in the story. ( )

A very shiny revisit of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Not bad, the action is paced very well, but the moral position of his antagonist was a little hard to follow until you remember, "oh wait, you're insane". Alten loves to write fallen heros, and this is no exception, though its a little hard to believe how swiftly the fallen hero is forgiven. The ending is rather specifically anti-gun, which is pretty annoying to me. ( )
