INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER * "Witty, dry, and gimlet-eyed, this is a necessary corrective in a world where Autistic women are all either written off as quiet and docile, or erased entirely." --Devon Price, Ph.D., author of Unmasking Autism Scottish comedian Fern Brady was told she couldn't be autistic because she'd had loads of boyfriends and is good at eye contact. In this frank and surreal memoir, she delivers a sharp and often hilarious portrait of neurodivergence and living unmasked. After reading about autism in her teens, Fern Brady knew instinctively that she had it--autism explained her sensory issues, her meltdowns, her inability to pick up on social cues--and she told her doctor as much. But it took until she was thirty-four for her to get diagnosed. Strong Female Character is about the years in between, and the unique combination of sexism and ableism that so often prevents autistic women from getting diagnosed until adulthood. Coming from a working-class Scottish Catholic family, Fern wasn't exactly poised to receive an open-minded acceptance of her neurodivergence. With the piercing clarity and wit that has put her at the top of the British comedy scene, she now reflects on the ways her undiagnosed autism influenced her youth, from the tree that functioned as her childhood best friend to the psychiatric facility where she ended up when neither her parents nor school knew what to do with her. In a memoir as hilarious as it is heartbreaking, Fern leaves no stone unturned while detailing her futile attempts at employment, her increasingly destructive coping mechanisms, and the meltdowns that left her mind (and apartment) in ruins. Her chaotic, nonlinear journey--from stripping to getting arrested to finding a lifeline in comedy to her breakout appearance on the Taskmaster TV show as her full, unmasked self--is both a remarkable coming-of-age tale and a dark but poignant tribute to life at the intersection of womanhood and neurodiversity. Strong Female Character is a story of how being female can get in the way of being autistic and how being autistic gets in the way of being the 'right kind' of woman.… (plus d'informations)

Strong Female Character is a raw, no-holds-barred memoir by Scottish comedian Fern Brady about growing up with undiagnosed autism. Not just undiagnosed but misdiagnosed and incorrectly medicated, which made Brady's time at secondary school and university ones of real turmoil, and put immense strain on her relationships with her family and her various partners.

Brady makes some good points, and I'm sure there will be many people with similar backgrounds who find that this book resonates with them. But I finished Strong Female Character feeling highly ambivalent about it, for a variety of reasons. All I will say is that as a memoir this feels premature, or at least that in a few years Brady may find herself writing a follow-up volume that displays the benefits of some more hindsight—while she is a feminist, she has clearly internalised a lot of fatphobia, classism, misogyny, etc, that she hasn't even begun to grapple with.

Brady gives us a brutally honest look into her life on the autism spectrum: the bad choices, the family alienation, the daily struggles to understand neurotypicals. Listening to the audiobook narrated in her own voice brings both the humor and the pathos of the book into even sharper focus. ( )

got to love Fern Brady during her time on Task Master and kept on loving her while reading this book. Fern Brady's childhood and early adulthood as an undiagnosed autistic woman reads like a hurricane of trauma! she makes it clear that she's not out of the storm, having to unpack years of masking and battle societal pressures to be neurotypical, but this book is so important!! for her and for everybody that reads it. it's a rollercoaster. and it's both funny and sad at the same time. her matter-of-fact way of writing and observing the world that shows how difficult and frustrating it is to live in a society that never says what it means or means what it says. this book is very readable and i see some reviews saying that the flow is off or not good and to me the flow makes sense for somebody who is autistic. i looooved Fern Brady's brutal honesty and observation. i feel like this is a mix of her being autistic and scottish. american people aren't brutally honest like the rest of the world is. this is worth the read if you want to learn more about what it's like to live - and hide your life - as an autistic woman ( )
