What a fantastic book!
Sleazy: bankers, developers, contractors, real estate agents, and lawyers screwing over retirees who move to Florida.
Illegal payments, cost cutting, building code violations, exorbitant HOA fees changed after they move in.
Oh and the mother of all hurricanes.
Takes place in Florida in the mid 70’s but is just as relevant today, think back to 2005-2008.
Or today for that matter.
Great story expertly told.
It’s fiction but it will happen. ( )

I had read this several times since it was first published and each time I enjoyed it. With current news, july 2021, including a condominium collapse that has brought up very similar issues to those described in this book, I read it again. Enjoyed it again. ( )

Široký panoramatický záběr na život určitých vrstev americké společnosti je rámován dramatickými událostmi při zásahu ničivého uragánu na Floridském pobřeží.
Děj je soustředěn do luxusního sídliště na jednom z ostrůvků u pobřeží Floridy, určeném především pro starší zámožné občany. Jejich životy se prolínají s osudy tvůrců sídliště, podnikateli, kteří se snaží co nejrychleji zhodnotit vynaložený kapitál bez ohledu na zajištění bezpečnosti staveb. V okamžiku, kdy pobřeží zasáhne ničivý uragán, se všechny vady projeví, většina sídliště mizí v moři a podnikatelská honba za ziskem má na svědomí stovky zmařených životů.

I thought the descriptions of all the inhabitants would drive me crazy but then I got caught up in all the personalities. If a lesser writer had attempted this, it would never have worked. JM wove a wonderful story with the warp and weft of these disparite lives and desires. The best part was the last third of the book when the pace picks up every so slightly and then roars to an eventful and dramatic finish. I loved it! ( )
