John Buckland Wright with William Hayter and Anthony Gross helped launch British engraving into the twentieth century. As an artist and teacher Buckland Wright was unique among his contemporaries in being equally skilled in both wood and copper engraving. Through his knowledge of the fine-print studios and of Atelier 17 in Paris, he introduced to British engravers the standards of excellence required in both engraving and printing. Buckland Wright's art is strongly romantic, his portrayal of the female figure is sensuous and affectionate and in his skill as an engraver he is the equal of Gill and Hayter. This book is published in two editions, a standard and a limited edition, and offers an illustrated catalogue raisonné of John Buckland Wright's engravings and illustrated books. It also contains a series of original essays on the life and work of John Buckland Wright, by Frank Martin, Eunice Martin, Peter Hacker and Philip Sutton, and a preface by John Piper. The limited edition contains an original print, Nu Couché, which was engraved in 1938 for an unfinished edition of the Sonnets of Louise Labé to be published by the Halcyon Press. This print has never been shown or reproduced before and has been printed on Gampi Vellum paper from the block owned by the artist's family. The printing has been under the supervision of Christopher Buckland Wright who has signed and numbered the 150 copies of the limited edition volume. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
