This is a cute short story set just after 1814 - the end of the Napoleonic peninsula battles. A nice quick read with some humor. ( )

Toby meets Miles in a pub. After a mutual satisfying tryst, Miles falls asleep and Toby robs him then runs. Figuring he'd never see Miles again, Toby attaches himself to a valet going to a small town, thinking he'd be able to get a job in the household of the valet's new employer, the Earl of Arvon. When the valet sees the run-down condition of the Earl's property, he returns to London. Toby figures he would step into the valet's shoes. Guess who is the Earl of Arvon? Will he have Toby arrested? Will they pick up where they left off at the pub? What does their futures hold?

I enjoyed this romp. Toby and Miles are both surprised by their actions and thoughts. I liked that Toby tried to show Miles his error in thinking. I enjoyed watching them open up to each other of their pasts eventually. I also liked seeing them work together to find the treasure Miles' father left in the falling down ruins. For once my detective skills where on track and I knew where they should have searched immediately and was thrilled when they looked there. I was also happy to see them work as one when trouble befalls them.

I would like to see where they go from here. Toby and Miles were fun characters. ( )
