"Three grown siblings confront their father's role in their mother's disappearance in this arresting novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Defending Jacob. Jane Larkin disappeared without a trace in November 1976. When ten-year-old Miranda arrives home from school that autumn afternoon, finding her mother's pocketbook in its usual spot in the front hall, she assumes her mother will be back any minute. But as the hours tick by, alone in the house, Miranda becomes filled with a steady certainty that her mother will never come home again. In the absence of other leads, detectives quickly turn their suspicions toward Jane's husband, Daniel. A criminal defense attorney, Dan would know a thing or two about how to stay one step ahead of investigators. Indeed, no evidence is ever found. But nor is any real possible motive. And so Miranda and her two older brothers, Jeff and Alex, are left in limbo, to be raised by the man who may or may not have murdered their mother. Over the years, as the case grows colder, each makes their own uneasy peace with the situation. Until one day, when they are all grown-and a body is found. Suddenly, the investigation is reinvigorated, and everyone has to choose a side in a confrontation they have long avoided. Once lines are drawn, there is no going back. Untangling a web of family secrets, compelling motives, and long-held grudges, William Landay masterfully grapples with a tantalizing case, calling into question the most basic of morals: How deep should family loyalty run? What do we owe to the dead? And what happens when the search for the truth could cost everything?"--… (plus d'informations)

Alex, Jeff and Miranda are siblings. Jeff’s best childhood friend is Phil; however, as adults, they drifted apart. In 1975, Miranda arrives home from school and immediately senses something different in the house. It’s too quiet. Her mom, Jane, is nowhere to be found and never returns.
This is told from the four separate points of view labeled Books 1 through 4. Each of these is about a quarter of the book.
Book 1 – recounts Phil’s version of how his book came to be. He was having writer’s block when he encountered his old childhood friend, Jeff. Jeff suggests that Phil write a book about Jane’s disappearance, which remains unsolved. The detective that worked the case believed that Jane’s husband, Dan, (Jeff’s dad) killed her but there is no body.
Book 2 is Jane’s version of events…or is it Jane?
Book 3 is Jeff’s point of view. He, Miranda and their Aunt Kate file a civil suit against Dan.
Book 4 is Dan’s point of view. He is now suffering from dementia but is willing to speak with Phil now about Jane’s disappearance. Phil is hoping to get a confession from Dan, even though Dan has maintained his innocence since Jane disappeared.
This was a slow-burn for me and actually sat unread in my Kindle for a long time before I picked it back up. I also was not a fan of the author not using quotation marks when characters were having conversations, it was strange. ( )

I literally read this straight through yesterday! I was finally able to get to a Barnes and Noble when we were in NC for a few weeks. This was one of the books that I grabbed because I really liked Defending Jacob. This book about the disappearance of a wife and mother with her husband presumed guilty completely held my interest. The oldest son, already out of the house, believes his father. The two youngest children, still at home, aren't so sure. There's no evidence and the case fades from the public. Two decades later, the remains of Jane Larkin are found and the investigation is reopened. Highly recommended. ( )

I was not expecting to read this in three consecutive evenings, and I just had to finish it to arrive at the ending. Plus, the family dynamics were incredibly engaging and the writing throughout was top-notch.

The story centers around a family that loses its mother/wife without a trace. The two youngest children, Miranda and Jeff, are the most affected by her sudden disappearance. Their oldest brother, Alex, is the least mostly due to his age. How each child relates to their father, the chief suspect, is the underlying tension in this book.

The question that lasts throughout the book centers on the father/husband, Dan. Did he or didn't he? What was his relationship with his wife, Jane, like? And there is a brilliant section that is told from Jane's POV that leaves no doubt about whodunit.

Yet the focus of the book is more about proving in a court of law who the suspect is and how the children deal with their growing up without their mom. And when they reach adulthood, the battle lines are well-entrenched for who suspects their dad, and who does not.

During the initial investigation, the spotlight on Dan as the chief suspect gradually dims and the DA chooses not to charge him. When a case is finally brought, Dan's skills as a defense attorney come to the fore brilliantly. Jane's sister, who has never liked Dan, plays a behind-the-scenes role in this case and relates incidents that in hindsight show the obvious to any who should be looking.

The ending was incredible and grabbed me and stayed long past when I got to the last sentence. ( )

Jane Larkin disappears one day, and her husband Dan is an immediate suspect. He remains steadfast in his denial of having anything to do with her disappearance and possible murder, while his wife's sister and two of his three children are convinced that he is guilty. Told from four different perspectives, it's an absorbing story - I did find the section narrated by Dan Larkin himself, in the advanced stages of dementia, to be less satisfying and frustrating, however, which is unfortunate since it's the final section of the book. Nevertheless, it was a good read and one that I would recommend. ( )
