Lift the Lid of Mystery A tasteless night club run by a failed JFK assassination co-conspirator brings out the worst in 1970s New York. Songbird Sadasia Trayne runs into a disco-era buzz saw of wine, women, and murder when she hooks up with the Brooklyn-based creator of a notorious TV sitcom. Her frantic SOS to a long-lost love, the Big Apple's closeted lesbian Chief of Police Detectives, drives this tale of memory and regret, compromise and topiary, politics and a corrupt press, Kris Kringle and twisted acts of love. Will the headline-grabbing sex crime she sets out to solve max out the Chief's investigative skills or deep-six her career? The Velvet Badge combines edge-of-your-seat storytelling with stone-cold hilarity and just a touch of holiday ho-ho-ho. Get your copy today by clicking the "Buy now" button right now! This is noir but a style that you probably have never really thought of before. One thing that came to me while reading was that this is like a less profane James Ellroy.

I was really looking forward to this book when it arrived. However, I was unable to finish it as I could not get a grip on the plot and what was going on with it. I never quite grasped who the main character was or where we were going. The lesbian detective never showed up before I was forced to put the book down. I’m not trying to yuck anyone’s gums, but this book was not for me. ( )

The Velvet Badge by Bob Mantel describes itself as a "New York Noir." The book's structure, to use the term loosely, is to introduce a series of over-the-top characters, with extensive backgrounds that make up a collection of almost independent vignettes. There is a murder plot surfacing now and then, but it can't really be described as a crime procedural -- a new character shows up in the last few pages and just explains everything. The gonzo writing style is fun for a while, but gets a little rich by the end. ( )

Readers will either love or hate THE VELVET BADGE. It's oddball enough to catch those who like experimental fiction and those with an offbeat sense of humor. For purists, fans of true detective fiction and of the original genre of noir, the book may be lacking. What drew this reader to the book was its setting in 1970s New York (wonderful city, wonderful decade), a woman running a disco, and a lesbian chief of police. Those three pieces sounded like the perfect recipe for delight. Instead, the book was picked up, put down, picked up, and put down again before the reader could actually make an attempt to be interested. Reading through it is like plowing a field: hard work, but the results should be good and useful. Are they? Each reader will have to determine that on its own as this book is not for everyone. ( )

Interesting premise coupled with the hard-bitten dialogue make for a rewarding read. ( )
