This is the second book in the Garnethill trilogy, which was Denise Mina’s earliest work. When I read Garnethill, I said that “Glasgow comes to life, and Maureen O’Donnell makes a complex, human protagonist. The issues at the heart of this story are serious, and there is some grim violence, but the whole is told with warmth and a bit of humour.” Garnethill had more on-stage gore, whereas Exile focuses on the psychological aftermath of Garnethill, and the grim violence happens off-screen more than on-screen. And as I did in Garnethill, I found myself getting a bit confused in a couple of places, mainly toward the end when Maureen figured out the solution and was naming a bunch of people that it took me a little while to remember. What I liked best in this story was Maureen’s relationship with her brother, Liam. I found this book hard going in places, to many minor characters. The main character is Maureen O Donnell she is looking for a missing woman called Ann from the Woman's refuge in Glasgow were she works. This leads her to London were she meets some dodgy characters. Ann has a husband and 4 young sons. A murdered woman is fished out the Thames it appears to be Ann. Maureen does some more digging, Ann faked her death to get away from loan sharks in Glasgow. Some Scum bag acquaintances of Anns kill a young Junkie and pretend its Ann. Maureen solves the case and tells the Police. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

The last time Maureen O'Donnell saw Ann Harris, she was in the Glasgow Women's Shelter smelling of a long binge on cheap drink. A month later Ann's mutilated body, stitched into a mattress, is washed up on the banks of the Thames. No-one, except for Maureen and her best mate, Leslie, seems to care about what has happened to her, and Maureen is the only person who thinks Ann's husband is innocent. But solving Ann's murder comes as light relief. Maureen's father is back in Glasgow, Leslie is sloping about like a nervous spy, and then there's Angus, Maureen's old therapist, who's twice as bright as she is and making her play a dangerous game with the police. In the long tradition of Scots in trouble, Maureen runs away to London. Looking for answers to the mystery surrounding Ann's death, she becomes embroiled in a seedy world of deceit and violence. Alone in a strange city, Maureen starts to piece together Ann's final days. But time is not on her side, and Maureen needs just twelve hours, just twelve, to put things right, and she doesn't care what it costs ... Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
