Nobody else working today writes farce like Carl Hiaasen does. He has several neat tricks for making things move along, but generally in his novels, we get a colorful cast of characters, each with their own foibles and tics, that will (mostly) come together at the end by way of intricate but vaguely plausible reasons to resolve all of the various narrative complications and quandries. And it will all be really funny. If that sounds a lot like the works of Molière, that's because it is.

In the best cases, everything snaps together with a satisfying click. This doesn't quite get there, but it is still a delight to read with several laugh-out-loud sections and a feeling, by the end, that things turned out correctly. If it isn't at the lofty highs of Hiaasen's best work, it's still damn good. ( )

This was a fun read; it had it had its ups and downs, but the ups beat the downs and made it all worthwhile. ( )

This is the first Carl Hiaasen book I read. I fell in love with Mr. Hiaasen's wit and Skink's attitude. I have been a fan ever since. ( )

Stormy Weather is another Carl Hiaasen book the features Kink, the former Governor of Florida. Skink lives in the remaining wilds of Florida and survives mainly on roadkill. While this book was written in 1995 there are some very current themes. Poorly built houses were damaged beyond repair by the storm. Unscrupulous builders, building inspectors and sales people were all to blame. Among the victims of the hurricane were two dachshunds names Donald and Marla and an advertising account executive who had only read one book in his life, The Art of the Deal.

There is an abduction in this story. The reader will find his or her self wondering who abducted whom before the story is over. ( )
