Lana and her sister get to leave snowy Cleveland for the sunshine of California. Lana's supposed to be attending a restaurant convention, but when she witnesses the death of one of her aunt's friends she ends up spending her time running down clues. Of course, she had to keep this from her boyfriend and her mother back home. With the blessing of her Aunt Grace and her sister's reluctant help, Lana puts her detective skills to the test. Another fun Noodle Shop mystery--even without the Noodle Shop! Thanks to St Martin's Press for access to a digital ARC on NetGalley. In this next installment in the Noodle Shop mystery series, Lana Lee and her sister Anna May take a break from the wintry weather in Ohio. Their vacation to visit Aunt Grace in California turns into an investigation into the death of Aunt Grace's friend Nora. Many suspects abound, and Lana is determined to get to the bottom of things. The addition of Asian-themed food and the development of the relationship between the two sisters were the best parts of the story for me. The action moves along quickly and keeps the reader involved. The characters are realistic and the book can be read as a standalone novel. The author includes enough detail and references to past cases and settings so readers do not feel lost if they have not read past installments. This book can be classified as a "cozy" mystery since there it lacks descriptive violence, strong language, or adult intimacy scenes. The mystery takes center stage. I received this novel from the publisher and from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are entirely mine. This is the ninth Noodle Shop Mystery and the first one I have read. This story finds Lana Lee and her sister Anna May visiting Irvine, California, for a restaurant convention. Their Aunt Grace lives in LA and invites the girls to stay in one of her rental condos and let her show them around. The first day at the convention, Lana witnesses an argument between a reviewer and fortune cookie vender. Lana is curious but goes on with her day. During the evening at a cocktail party, things go wrong when someone falls from the roof. Lana is surprised to learn that the woman who fell was a good friend of Aunt Grace and also the woman she had seen arguing earlier in the day. Lana puts her detecting skills to her aunt's disposal as they try to find out who murdered Nora Blackwell. They uncover a lot of secrets leading Aunt Grace to feel that she never knew her friend at all. I enjoyed getting to know Lana and also enjoyed the hints at her earlier cases. She was smart, determined, and stubborn. I liked her relationship with her "perfect" older sister Anna May. I liked that she didn't know what she wanted to be until she was a bit older and liked how she discovered that detecting was a skill she had to use. Moving Lana and Anna May to a new environment meant that she was without her usual support network which includes her police officer boyfriend - the one she promised to stay out of dangerous situations. It also slimmed down the cast of characters which was a blessing for someone coming new to the series. I enjoyed this story. The mystery was well-developed, and I enjoyed the cast of characters. Asian-Americans, amateur-sleuth, verbal-humor, situational-humor, family-dynamics, family, relatives, Chinese-culture, Chinese-customs, murder, murder-investigation, cozy-mystery, family-drama, family-business, siblings, sisters, California, lawyers, secrets, friendship, law-enforcement, suspense Nothing is as it seems. Except, maybe, the sibling rivalry between Lana the Noodle Shop manager and her older sister Anna May the almost lawyer. And also between Aunt Grace and their mother. Aunt Grace's good friend takes a dive off the roof at a party and Lana is bound to investigate. So is Aunt Grace, but certainly NOT Anna May. This is not their hometown in Cleveland, and the detective is not her boyfriend, but asleuthing they go anyway. There's the nasty mouthed fortune cookie vender, the cold fish husband, and a few more interesting suspects, and a whole lot of red herrings. I knew this would be another good read in a delightful series, and I was right! I requested and received an EARC from St. Martin's Press/St. Martin's Paperbacks via NetGalley.
