Well done snapshot of the current publishing world. Enjoyable to read but not a book to read again, commercial vs literary fiction. Well written yet no great sentences, no passages to remember. Very good for what it is, a fun diversion. ( ) Mixed thoughts about this one. Some clever and topical themes - the role of social media in the book publishing industry, cancel culture and authors that dare to write without authentic, lived experience. However, I found myself bored at times (too long, perhaps? Too self-absorbed?) and a little irritated by the reverse racism. Overall, over-hyped. This book appears to be well promoted but I’d never heard of the author before. I listened to this as an audiobook. Yellowface is about two young writers, an Asian one, and a White one. The Asian woman dies leaving behind an unread manuscript that the White woman reworks and publishes as a best seller. But bits of her secret lurk and threaten her and she pulls out all the stops keep her reputation and success intact. But the story is really about cancel culture, racism/reverse racism, token minorities, cultural appropriation....but all turned on its head in unexpected ways. I always appreciate when a writer can make me root for a villain. Very well written, very good audiobook performance. It's hard to even give this a review because I hated it so much. If you must read this book, then read any version but avoid the audiobook. The reader was as obnoxious as the book content is, which may have been the point of the way she read it and the voice she used - pretentious, dated, valley-girl, utterly unbearable to listed to. The book content may be liked by YA audiences or pre-teens. The only thing I can say in this book's defence is that it is a reflection of the current social media culture. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
