4861. Scenes of Clerical Life I (The Sad Fortunes of the Rev. Amos Barton [and]; Mr. Gilfil's Love-Story) by George Eliot (read 14 Sep 2011) This is Volume I of "The Writings of Geroge Eliot" (a 1909 edition) and contains the first two stories of Scenes of Clerical Life. Rev. Barton is a rather ineffectual clegyman with six children who is imposed on by a woman who left her brother's house because the brother decided to marry the maid. It is a poignant story, and much more readable than I expected. The second story, Mr Gilfil's Love-Story, is also highly dramatic and reminded me of how I felt after reading George Eliot's masterpiece, The Mill on the Floss. Caterina loves above her station, and decides to kill the man who is going to marry another woman. Both of these stories are dramatic and well-written, particularly when you realize they are George Eliot's first-written fiction. ( )
