I had never heard of this book (later it appeared in my dreams), so I picked it up because of the author. It is certainly no Oscar Wilde, but felt more like an experiment in dialogues, and pushing the boundaries of acceptable behaviour between married life and extra-marital affairs at the time; but with an Oscar Wilde - style revelation at the end (but not babies swapped at birth). Interesting, but not great. This edition had the author's own notes and an introduction by Padraic Colum. ( )

Joyce's writing in this play is sort of wonderfully intentional, and it reminded me very much of those works I'd already read by him--The Dead perhaps especially. This is one of those rare cases where I think I'm glad to have read a play rather than seen it in person, and watching the characters play out of the page uncomfortably intimate and real in a way that can only speak to Joyce's mastery. You may then know in soul and body, a hundred forms, and ever restlessly, what some old theologian, Duns Scotus, I think, called a death of the spirit.

There is a muddy dip of uncertainty surrounding this piece. I have been addled by overwork for over a month and having found this paperback a few weeks back I kept it in reserve: circumstances rewarding portability have grown common. My expectations for Exiles were of a bridge, another route to Ulysses and the Wake. The opening act appeared to anticipate just such a Bloom/Molly dynamic. Things then went haywire, an akimbo drift into a fencing of manners where perhaps Heidegger held a key. I found this uncanny as I recently viewed Kazan's Baby Doll and found the introduction of Eli Wallach's character a perfect foil to a tale of Southern decline. Here in Exiles the betrayed character refuses to condemn nor employ violence. Such matters are beyond him, as if the epistemological limits preclude a definite stand. Is this a ruse, perhaps to condone his own infidelity? Is there hope or despair in his heart? The closest literary equivalent I considered was Tolstoy's [b:The Kreutzer Sonata|141077|The Kreutzer Sonata |Leo Tolstoy|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1426179627s/141077.jpg|2266654] The questions of identity and propriety within a relationship are ultimately extrapolated into the duty to one's land and one's faith. Any scurrying outside of such and ambiguity and relativism are brought to bear. For all the play's emotive combustion, Joyce yields a worthy lesson in understatement. ( )

Esuli è l'unica opera drammatica di Joyce che ci sia pervenuta. In gioventù aveva infatti scritto altri due drammi, oltre a essersi intensamente appassionato al teatro e alla vita teatrale irlandese ed europea covando l'ambizione di poter diventare il successore di Ibsen. Il successivo evolversi della sua sensibilità estetica lo allontanò però dalla drammaturgia.
Il suo amore per il teatro è tuttavia riscontrabile nelle sue opere narrative, dove è rigidissimo, secondo la sua inclinazione aristotelica, nel mantenere una ben definita unità di tempo: così in quasi tutte le novelle, nei vari episodi di "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" , in "Ulysses" e in "Finnegan's Wake".
L'attività letteraria di Joyce iniziò proprio con un articolo sull'ultimo dramma di Ibsen (Ibsen's New Drama), stampato nell'aprile 1900 dal "Fortnightly Review", la più quotata rivista letteraria inglese. Era un saggio di sedici pagine, in gran parte dedicato all'esame di "Quando noi morti ci destiamo" che era stato pubblicato pochi mesi prima a Copenhagen. Questo successo diede al diciottenne Joyce una grande reputazione nell'ambito studentesco. E, fermo nel suo grande amore per il teatro, spese i soldi così guadagnati per recarsi a Londra ad ascoltare la Duse che recitava D' Annunzio.
Già da questo saggio vediamo come ciò che colpisce il giovane nella personalità di Ibsen sono proprio quegli elementi che diverranno i motivi conduttori della sua posizione intellettuale in futuro: in dipendenza dalle strettoie conformiste della religione e del nazionalismo, negazione del sentimentalismo, precisione logica, freddo realismo, l'attenzione posta al conflitto spirituale, rifiuto di un eroe conformisticamente ortodosso.
Scrisse egli stesso una commedia in cinque atti intitolata "A Brilliant Career" e dedicata alla sua anima. La mandò al traduttore di Ibsen, William Archer, che gli rispose in modo lusinghiero; è questo tutto ciò che sappiamo di questa opera, che egli poi distrusse unitamente a un altro dramma, in versi.
Nel 1901, in occasione del compleanno di Ibsen, Joyce gli scrisse una lettera di saluto e di augurio, proclamandosi "uno della giovane generazione per cui egli aveva parlato" e la tradusse egli stesso in danese, che aveva imparato apposta per leggere il teatro di quell'autore.
