**Early Reviewer Win** A collection of short stories involving ghosts of different varieties. Some of the stories are a bit more suspenseful than the rest and can get you could if you aren't ready. Still an all-right read for horror lovers.

Any collection of short stories, particularly a collection of works by disparate authors, will have some tales that appeal to a reader more than others. Much like a bag of jelly beans, there are usually a few licorice-flavored stories that have to be taken along with the tastier ones. Fortunately, in this case, there are only a couple of stories that were duds for me (including one where the resolution was so infuriating that I felt like kicking the protagonist). Overall, I found this collection of ghost stories to be fun, easily digestible, and entertaining, with a few standout entries and the balance pretty good or good -- not particularly scary, overall, but that's fine with me. I appreciated the short length of most of the stories as well; it made it easy to pick up the book, read a chapter or two, and then set it down again. ( )

Will I ever rate an anthology something other than three of five stars? Something other than so-so? As seemingly always with anthologies or short story collections there are ones that are mediocre or downright bad, as in badly written; others very good. Some that left me indifferent, some that touched or grabbed me, some I might even remember. This ghost story/horror anthology is no different in this respect. Some stories that I enjoyed reading were:
Old Spirits and Fine Tobacco by John P. Collins,
Fetch by Randee Dawn,
The Bells by Marc L. Abbott,
Red Mare by Teel James Glenn,
The Spectacles by Lou Rera,
Rawhide Rex by Rick Poldark and
What's your secret by Trevor Firetog, which gave me major Twilight Zone vibes.

I received this book via LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program - Thanks, LT! - in exchange for an honest review. ( )

A very mixed bag of ghoulies and ghosties, some excellent:

- Moshigawa's Homecoming
- What's Your Secret?
- House of Cracks
- Blind Spot
- In the Machine
- Taps

some so-so:
- The Final Experiment of Eugene Appleton
- I Am Helen Anne Gunthe
- Power Out Wind Howling
- The Red Mare
- The Bells
- Schrodinger's Ghost
- After Trevor Vanished
- Bruised and Battered Nevermore
- The Spectacles
- The Source of Fr. Santiago de Guerra de Vargas' Monstrous Crimes
- Rawhide Rex

two in dire need of some serious editing:
- Old Spirits and Fine Tobacco: to get rid of a convoluted and unbelievable framing story which serves no particular purpose, some weird word choices and spelling mistakes
- Fetch: where use of present tense in the narrative lends a sort of gamebook touch and the country yokel villain just cannot seem to make up his mind what dialect he is talking

and one I could not make head nor tail of.
- Insubstantial ( )

I received a free copy of this book through the Early Reviewers programme is exchange for an honest review.

This anthology has the variety of a paranormal pick'n'mix - there is something for everyone here, everyone who likes ghosts anyway. There are threatening ghosts, helpful ghosts, non-human ghosts, ghosts who don't know they are ghosts: in summary, pretty much every ghost you can imagine.

As is usually the case with anthologies, there were some stories that spoke to me more than others. Here are are few of my favourites:

House of Cracks: A traumatised veteran haunted by both the ghosts of her past and the spirits trapped in a spooky deathtrap of a tenement building.

Old Spirits and Fine Tobacco: This is all about the atmosphere, which soaks into you like the spirits and scents in the title.

Moshigawa's Homecoming: A tragic ethereal tale set in historical Japan.

Schrodinger's Ghost: A tale with very dark themes that keeps you guessing until the end

Rawhide Rex: This story is very cool, but to say why would be a spoiler...

A few stories went a bit over my head. For example, I could see the hint of a great premise in 'Insubstantial' but I just got too confused to truly enjoy it. Still, I'd recommend to all ghost story lovers - read this and find out what flavour of ghost suits you best.
