Un romanzo che all'epoca in cui è uscito (1948) diede scandalo, per la maniera esplicita di parlare del mondo omosessuale. Vidal è stato un precursore e la sua opera seppure osteggiata da molti è stata invece apprezzata da larga parte di pubblico e critica.
Oggi il libro è spogliato del suo alone di innovazione e non esercita più su di noi il fascino del proibito, quindi possiamo giudicarlo per i suoi meriti oggettivi: quello che resta è un romanzo di spessore, con una accurata introspezione psicologica dei personaggi. E' interessante anche per la descrizione del mondo omosessuale della prima metà del secolo: un universo fatto di sottotesti e di non detti, di locali clandestini e incontri segreti. Non è certo un libro leggero, anzi è pervaso di amarezza e frustrazione ed il finale è praticamente un pugno nello stomaco, ma mi ha tenuto avvinta dalla prima all'ultima pagina ( )

Che Jim, dopo essergli rimasto legato - più o meno morbosamente - col cuore e con la mente - bisogna pur che il corpo esulti invece, come cantava quello - per anni, quando la realtà gli sbatte sul muso reagisca con lo stupro dell'agognato Bob, contrariamente a quello che qualche anobiiano ha espresso in sede di commento, a me sembra la cosa più riuscita di tutto il romanzo che, per il resto è, invece, sufficientemente piatto, lineare ... QUASI monotono (anche se il pur giovane Gore Vidal piazza là, ogni 20 pagine circa, una righetta sottile sottile e penetrante che con la sua forza regge tutta la baracca - cioè il romanzo - [lineetta] )[chiusa parentesi] . Not one of my favorites by Vidal, and can [today] seem rather outdated, but is still important as the groundbreaking first novel featuring "masculine" homosexuals. This is the book that effectively got Vidal blacklisted for several years. ( )

I'm honestly not entirely sure what I thought of this story of a young man navigating the homosexual subculture of New York and Hollywood in the forties. I didn't care much for the style, though Vidal does get character sketches across pretty adroitly. I didn't find any of the characters particularly interesting, but the story was still compelling somehow. The whole thing is quite bleak without being depressing exactly, and there seems to be this suggestion that no two human beings ever have any chance of connecting because they will never be honest enough with themselves to do so. Which, meh. ( )

I liked this book. The straightforward prose is misleadingly simple, and hides a interesting structure and some good character development. Although Jim is our protagonist, we never get a really good sense of him as a character, and I think that is deliberate. Instead, the side characters are filled with details and dimensions that end up teaching us about Jim.
