This book is excelent for having children use context clues and make predictions. ( )

Adults will probably recognize the images pretty quickly, but little kids are going to love the "reveals".

This wordless book allows children to guess what's on the next page through a peephole. And then you get to see what it is! Great conversation starter and imagination spurrer. ( )

Tana Hoban does a wonderful job of taking an audience through a story through her wondeful photographs. Her books are always great for adventurious children. ( )

I haven't looked at a picture book and actually enjoyed it, in a very long time. Picture books are always different, and can be interpreted in many different ways, depending on the reader. Look Book by Tana Hoban is a wordless book that is full of possibilities. There are bright, beautiful photographs in this book, that are first viewed through a small circle on a black page. The viewer is then supposed to come up with their own interpretation and use inferences to figure out what the picture on the next page may be. Tana Hoban's books can be enjoyed by a variety of ages, and she has had many other similar books published; Shapes and Things, Colors Everywhere!, and Is It Larger, Is It Smaller, just to name a few. I loved Look Book, and the way it allowed me to come to my own conclusions about what the larger image may be. It is interesting to hear others opinions on what the pictures may be.
Tana Hoban was born in 1917 in Philadelphia, and at a young age, Hoban took up drawing and wanted to become an illustrator. She then discovered the art of photography, and after graduating from The School of Design for Women, she wrote a series of concept books for children including Look Book, and the other books mentioned earlier.
Tana Hoban's books may be an extraordinary display of beautiful photographs, but there are many processes that children may experience when looking at her books. Look Book encourages children to use inferences to guess what may be on the next page after seeing only a small portion of the overall photograph. Children use the knowledge they may know already to make a guess as to what the overall photo may be. A quick lesson plan can be planned with this book, children can be put in groups each with a copy of the book. Children can discuss the clues that each small portion of the picture gives, then can come up with inference charts based on what they know, and what they think the photograph may be. ( )
