Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us (original 1993; édition 1999)

First part was interesting and an easy read but it did make me feel a little weird that fictional characters were used alongside actual people as examples of psychopaths. Around the halfway point, I started to feel like it was an infomercial for the author's checklist and my attention wandered. The last chapter - how to avoid them - was more like "they have dead eyes" and "here's what you should do when you are inevitably taken in by one". The first half would easily get another star. But the book lost momentum and fizzled for me. ( )

Bekende voorbeelden uit de recente geschiedenis zijn de massamoordenaars Ted Bundy en John Wayne Gacy. Maar er zijn ook kinderen die martelen en moorden. En er zijn 'zorgzame' verpleegsters die hun patiënten vermoorden. Het zijn allemaal dramatische voorbeelden van psychopathie.

Individuen met deze persoonlijkheidsstoornis zijn zich volledig bewust van de gevolgen van hun daden, maar ze zijn niet in staat zich te bekommeren om de gevoelens van anderen.

Op basis van 25 jaar wetenschappelijk onderzoek, schildert dr. Robert Hare in dit boek een wereld van vermeende artiesten, prostituées, zorgzame verpleegsters, verkrachters, dieven etc. die weten te charmeren, liegen als de beste en zich een weg manipuleren door het leven. ( )

So much more than a mere glimpse into the human psyche. This work probes into the darkest recesses of mankind's inability to experience the emotional balance that draws the thinnest of lines between that which is simply the darker thoughts of the man's depressive nature and that which moves well into the realms that become pathology and complete imbalance. He shares with his readers the many aspects of this troubling condition. Those who have this condition show forth certain characteristics that are noticeable to the trained mind. Interesting study. Unfortunately there was a high usage of vulgarity (at least 20+ uses: all were used in quotes by the "psychopaths" mentioned herein).
