The late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries saw the virtual reinvention of the known world. It was at this time that the very notion of knowledge itself began to shift away from classical traditions of diversity to the modern scientific model of the world based upon absolute andunchanging principles. Contemporary literature both embraced and rejected the change - a change less violent than that characterizing the preceding Civil War period, but one so far-reaching that it effectively signalled the separation of the modern from the early-modern world. The writing of theperiod 1650-1750 is seen in new perspectives, the intellectual and cultural climate shaping and reshaping authors' responses and in turn being refracted by their works. Milton, Defoe, Swift, and Pope are fully present - but often in new guises and with emphasis on their involvement in contemporarycultural issues - along with lesser known writers such as Traherne, Behn and the Wartons.
