A sordid tale of bigamy, bribery, sex, and violence, set in the Gilded Age, explores the ill-fated saga of Ray, an Alexander Hamilton heir, and his wife, a con artist who tricked him into marriage using an abandoned infant, and who went to prison for stabbing their baby's nurse.

Interesting story but a bit drawn-out near the end ( )

I only gave this a 3 because it was such a boring plot. The writing is incredible! I read every page. It's like I wanted to be drawn in, but there wasn't enough meat on the bone.

Please continue writing...you have immense ability! ( )

They say that truth is stranger than fiction, and the story of the marriage of Ray and Eva was far, far stranger than fiction. It made for captivating, though sad, reading.

I thought Beatrice's story was especially sad and was disappointed with Ray's relatives for not honoring the provision he made for her in his will.

I had no sympathy for Eva, but I did feel badly for Ray. Though Eva apparently proved adept at deceiving many, he was the most affected by her lies and had the humiliation of seeing his mistakes made public.

I appreciated the inclusion of letters, newspaper articles, and court transcripts. It really helped to flesh out the account.

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys bizarre, true stories. ( )

I had never heard about these members of the Hamilton family and was therefore intrigued to find out more. The writing of this book ambled along at a very leisurely pace and it seemed to include a lot of characters that were not that important to the story line.
The scenes in the courtrooms reminded me a lot of the way "Law and Order" is in on TV..... that was the most interesting part. ( )

Had the Hamilton story that unfolds on these pages occurred today, it would merit blanket coverage on cable news and provide ample fodder for a barrage of biting headlines on the front pages of the New York tabloids. -Introduction
On Monday, January 7, 1889, an unlikely couple crossed the Hudson River from Manhattan to Patterson, New Jersey, to be married. -Chapter 1
