Brilliant representation for teens of marginalised identities, the story was a bit weak for an adult reader but lots of lessons well-integrated into the story. ( )

Van Callender las ik al eerder King en de drakenvlinders. Mooi boek. Maar dit boek is nog 10 keer beter. Het is een nieuwe aanwinst in de Querido Glow reeks, één van de beste vind ik. De cover is ook buitengewoon mooi. Callander is geweldig en lijkt almaar beter te worden; dat belooft.

Lark & Kasim gaat over Lark die een boek probeert te schrijven. Jammer genoeg wordt hen bij elke uitgeverij afgewezen. De kritiek die hen krijgt is dezelfde kritiek die Callender vaak krijgt zag ik online, best ironisch. Ja, in Larks boek én in Callenders boek komen er veel non-binaire, polyamoureuze, zwarte, neurodivergente, queer personen aan bod. En ja, voor een Xennial is dat allemaal even wennen, net als hen/hun als voornaamwoord even wennen is. Maar het is niet omdat we het (nog) niet gewoon zijn, dat we het niet moeten lezen.

We kunnen er wat van leren; van de jongere generaties om ons heen, van Lark en Kasim én van Callender. En ja, dit is soms een confronterend boek: hoe jouw blik is, hoe blind je misschien wel bent voor bijvoorbeeld wit privilege. En je gaat ook nadenken over in hoeverre jij jezelf bent; leef jij een leven bepaald door (overgeërfde) trauma’s, het gevoel/idee geliked te moeten/willen worden?

Ik heb genoten van het verhaal, de personages, de schrijfstijl. Het is een romantisch verhaal met belangrijke boodschappen die vlotjes rondgestrooid worden, nergens belerend overkomen. Niet enkel de personages en hun gender en seksualiteit, maar ook de gevaren van de socials (in dit geval veelal Twitter) en wit privilege, racisme, politiegeweld én zo veel meer uitermate belangrijke, hyper actuele thema’s komen aan bod. Ik heb ook veel bijgeleerd over jong zijn in onze huidige (online) wereld maar ook over mijzelf (pleasen, conformeren,..).

Callender schreef een boek dat jong én oud moet lezen. Omdat de wereld hoe hen het beschrijft de wereld is waar we naar toe gaan, waar we (misschien zelfs) al zijn. Het geeft me moed en hoop om te lezen hoe anders we ook kunnen omgaan met vriendschappen, relaties, liefde in het algemeen. Een fijn extraatje is het feit dat dit boek ook ineens schrijflessen bevat voor zij die zelf een boek willen schrijven, een revolutie willen starten. Het is een ode aan het schrijven, het schrijven mét een (activistische) boodschap.

Kacen Callender stak veel moeilijke thema’s in dit verhaal maar Lark en Kasim is geen moeilijk boek; het leest als een trein en brengt je ondertussen veel bij. Lark en Kasim, Sable, Asha,… sluit je meteen en voor eeuwig in je hart.

Aanrader voor jong én oud. Eén van de belangrijkste boeken die ik in 2022 al las! ( )

Seventeen-year-old Black, queer, trans, neurodivergent Lark misses her former best friend Kasim, and is convinced that if she gets 50k Twitter followers, a book deal will be forthcoming. But, as she learns, she's writing for the wrong reasons - to please other people and to be loved, rather than to send her message out into the world. With the help of friends - and antagonists - Lark realizes that bravery and change are required. Set in West Philly.

A challenging read, as Callender successfully writes a neurodivergent character in first person; it can be uncomfortable to be in Lark's head and heart.

Maybe realizing that each and every human being makes mistakes means we can have more compassion for others when they mess up. Maybe that means having more compassion for ourselves, too. (218)

In a world that wants me to hate myself, teaches me to hate myself, expects me to hate myself, learning to love myself instead can be an entire revolution. (310) ( )

My experience with Lark and Kasim Start a Revolution was mixed. I enjoyed the characters, rooted for them, but also felt exhausted by them—sounds just like a stereotypical old person responding to teens, doesn't it?

I am, however, not the intended audience for this book. It's written for and about a community of nonbinary teens, most of them POC. That's a community that is hugely underrepresented (times infinity) in current publishing. I will be recommending Lark and Kasim Start a Revolution to my students, buying copies of it to share, and looking forward to future titles from this author.

If you enjoy YA literature and/or want more depictions of nonbinary, POC youth, grab this book. Read it, then pass on your copy to someone who needs it. We all have people who fit that description in our lives.

This YA novel covered a lot of hot button issues of the current nascent decade: the experience of the pandemic, racism and police brutality, lgbtqia identities, trans rights, and polyamory, among others. It was set in a true to life Philadelphia, which was delightful. I think you'd already need to have well established knowledge and ideas of the issues in the novel, and maybe to have had similar experiences and feelings to the main characters to really vibe with it; it wasn't an introductory or explanatory kind of text. I know the right audience will love it. I don't doubt it could be a new generation's The Perks of Being a Wallflower. ( )
