I received this book from the Early Reviewer program. As someone who recycles, and has an interest in doing more, this book is certainly a great start. Well known, and relatively unknown women (to me) have followed their passion and accepted the challenge to save our planet in so many different ways from up cycling clothes, to conserving energy, and reducing the use of plastic. This book also has tips and information on how we can become more involved in saving the planet. We can either join these women, or join a local or national organization that supports our cause. We can also advocate to go green by doing research and contacting our local representatives and companies. Everyone can do something to save our planet. This book is a great start. ( )

Much needed collection worth your attention.
Some really interesting profiles and useful info... I browsed through it once and plan to revisit and share with friends before gifting it to my niece! ( )

Overall, I found this book a worthwhile read: upfront about the issues and the urgency of addressing them, but inspiring and hopeful. I also appreciated that each subject got several pages’ worth of biography, as opposed to the one-page-and-a-picture format so popular right now. The only reason I gave this four and a half stars instead of five is that the selection is heavily weighted toward CEOs (something I probably should’ve anticipated given the author’s background); I would’ve liked to see more activists and scientists included. But it’s fantastic that all these women are working diligently and creatively to tackle the problem of climate change, and the rest of us — individuals, businesses, communities and governments — would do well to follow suit. Girls Who Green the World is a collection of profiles featuring environmental changemakers, social entrepreneurs, visionaries, and activists with guides for Young Adult readers to the contemporary environmental movement.

This book had a lot of information I wasn’t aware of. Mostly how companies have or haven’t helped in saving the world and all the badass women who are out there trying to shine light on the giant problems we have that are destroying our planet.

One of the interesting facts I can still remember is how landfills are like time capsules where food doesn’t ever breakdown because there’s no oxygen and how scientist that are studying that have found things like brand new looking hotdogs that were actually forty-years-old and an order of relatively green guacamole next to a newspaper that dated 1967.

I also enjoyed the little tidbits of Facts sprinkled in throughout each of the profiles as it made the connections of what the women were speaking about all the more powerful. The guides at the end of profiles were helpful as well and would bring attention to not only the next steps a young person can do, but also shine the light on other organizations that are similar to the work that the previous profiler does.

Overall, this is a great resource for everyone. Even though it’s aimed at young adults, especially with the guides at the end of the profiles, I feel like it’s worth a read for everyone to educate themselves on the steps needed to save our planet Earth.

I was very impressed with Girls Who Green the World! This collective biography profiles 34 "rebel women out to save our planet," as the subtitle states. They are doing everything from finding alternatives for toxic ingredients in cosmetics and clothing and new uses for materials usually considered as garbage, to reducing use of plastics and fossil fuels and decreasing food waste. Their stories are inspiring.

Author Diana Kapp begins with an introduction to the book and to the climate change problem, including a couple pages of infographics. The profiles are interspersed with various facts and segments on ways to take action.

Each profile begins with a wonderful, full-page color portrait (in markers, pencils, and acrylics) by Spanish artist Ana Jarén. These flattering illustrations emphasize the racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity of the subjects. This is followed by the subject's answers to initial questions to make them more relatable, like "a word or phrase I most overuse," "a habit I'm trying to give up," or "something I used to do before I realized how bad it was for the environment." The author interviewed each subject and includes quotations from their responses, in their own words.

The book ends with a call to action, sources for the information in the infographics (I wish sources had also been included for the interspersed facts), and acknowledgments. The book is aimed at tweens, teens, and young adults, but I'd say it's appropriate for anyone wanting to make a difference, from age 11 up.

I'm 65, and I found this book to be quite motivating. For example, after reading the profile of Sarah Paiji Yoo, cofounder and CEO of Blueland, I was intrigued by her company's innovative cleaning products that are good for the environment AND get rid of the water (and thus the need for plastic), and have ordered some of them to try. I found myself making notes throughout the book of other products to investigate and practices to implement to help save our planet. ( )
