NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER * The standout literary debut that everyone is talking about * "Inventive, heartbreaking and acutely funny."--The Guardian A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The New York Times, TIME, NPR, Oprah Daily, People Blandine isn't like the other residents of her building. An online obituary writer. A young mother with a dark secret. A woman waging a solo campaign against rodents -- neighbors, separated only by the thin walls of a low-cost housing complex in the once bustling industrial center of Vacca Vale, Indiana. Welcome to the Rabbit Hutch. Ethereally beautiful and formidably intelligent, Blandine shares her apartment with three teenage boys she neither likes nor understands, all, like her, now aged out of the state foster care system that has repeatedly failed them, all searching for meaning in their lives. Set over one sweltering week in July and culminating in a bizarre act of violence that finally changes everything, The Rabbit Hutch is a savagely beautiful and bitingly funny snapshot of contemporary America, a gorgeous and provocative tale of loneliness and longing, entrapment and, ultimately, freedom. "Gunty writes with a keen, sensitive eye about all manner of intimacies―the kind we build with other people, and the kind we cultivate around ourselves and our tenuous, private aspirations."--Raven Leilani, author of Luster… (plus d'informations)

The writing is very intricate and bizarre - I enjoyed it but I felt it didn't work well for this particular story.
Every character sounded the same, as they were all written in the author's style, so it felt unrealistic. Not everyone speaks like Rory Gilmore on steroids.

Various stories and characters residing in a decrepit low-rent housing complex in the Rust Belt compete for the reader's attention and each is about quirky, self-involved, precariously sane individuals, all interesting, but none in which I became invested. The pacing chugged forward nicely until about two-thirds in when I was anxious for resolution for the young Blandine who has suffered so much damage. Animals are hurt, too. But what do I know? This book was on eligibility lists for the Booker Prize, the Women's Fiction Prize, the New York Times 100 Notable Books of 2022, and the National Book Awards Longlist. I also read this book at an emotionally fraught time over spousal illness so my impressions may be skewed. The author has an amazing imagination and the writing is excellent. ( )

Characters unable to connect to each other shed identities, roles, names. A brilliant unapproachable girl stands at the center of a vortex of attention. An entire constellation of disaffected townspeople, men who want to sleep with her, women who pity or fear her, all who seem to admire her, and all come into focus when they see themselves in her. Fuck this book. I can't think of a book I've enjoyed less, honestly. Why did this win the National Book Award? I will never trust that list again. One star because I can't give it zero. ( )
