From the USA Today best-selling author of Two Truths and a Lie and The Islanders, a delicious summer read set in midcoast Maine, tackling family secrets, marriage, motherhood, and privilege. Louisa has come to her parents' house in Maine this summer with all three of her kids, a barely-written book, and a trunkful of resentment. Left behind in Brooklyn is her husband, who has promised that after this final round of fundraising at his startup he will once again pick up his share of the household responsibilities. Louisa is hoping that the crisp breeze off Penobscot Bay will blow away the irritation she is feeling with her life choices and replace it with enthusiasm for both her family and her work. But all isn't well in Maine. Louisa's father, a retired judge and pillar of the community, is suffering from Alzheimer's. Louisa's mother is alternately pretending everything is fine and not pretending at all. And one of Louisa's children happens upon a very confusing and heartfelt letter referring to something Louisa doesn't think her father could possibly have done. Louisa's not the only one searching for something in Maine this summer. Kristie took the Greyhound bus from Pennsylvania with one small suitcase, $761, and a lot of baggage. She's got a past she's trying to outrun, a secret she's trying to unpack, and a new boyfriend who's so impossibly kind she can't figure out what she did to deserve him. But she can't keep her various lives from colliding forever. As June turns to July turns to August, secrets will be unearthed, betrayals will come to light, and both Louisa and Kristie will ask themselves what they are owed and what they owe others. A delicious summer read and an exploration of family, responsibility, ambition and loss, Vacationland is Meg Mitchell Moore at her best.… (plus d'informations)

Vacationland is a solid read. It is a gentle ride to the beach in Maine with Louisa, a mother of three, whose husband is working over-over time to get his start up ready for acquisition, and who is there visiting her parents. While at the family’s beach house, Louisa watches the decline of her judge-father as he sinks into the world of Alzheimer’s, her son 12-year old son fall for their house help’s 13-year-old granddaughter, and learn that she has a half-sister.

With this much going on I was surprised at how level the characters stayed. While it may have been a bit romantic, it was also nice not to see Louisa and her absent husband get the suspected divorce, and for the half-sister not to be crazy, and the Dad to not completely lose it.

Vacationland is more of a slow burn that needs no putting out, it just saunters along gracefully until the story is wrapped up neatly with all the pieces put where one would expect. I am usually not keen on the all-tied-up-in-a-neat-bow ending, but Meg Mitchell Moore did it in such a way that was not syrupy sweet. I would recommend this book and will read another of Ms. Moore’s work. ( )

I enjoyed the audiobook but my library copy kept expiring so it took me a while to finish listening to it. ( )

I really enjoy the writings of this author, I hadn't realized how many of her books I've read. This book I loved more because I'm very familiar with the town of Rockland Maine, visited many times, and its great when you can read and envision where the book is taking you. She writes wonderful family stories, families in every shape and form. Great read! ( )

This sounded like the perfect summer read. It fit in nicely for light deck reading and worked in the waiting room as well! There’s nothing exciting about this book. It travels along detailing one summer in the life of a family whose summer roots were in a coastal Maine community. As the author introduces the characters or moves the reader through the current story, past relationships are revealed. The plot is predictable, and the characters are as expected for a vacation setting. Sacrifice was a big theme in the family structures.
It took me a few days to figure out what was bothering me about this book. I realized that although non-traditional gender roles were front and center in the narrative, in the end, the men all became the saviors, leaving the women to fall into line and head back to their second fiddle places. I ( )
