"I love Emily." â??Madeleine L'Engle

Keeping a Promise Was Never So Difficult

Emily Starr knows that she is destined to become a great writer. But she also knows that her life will be absolutely miserable if she can't attend school with her bosom friends. And the only way her strict Aunt Elizabeth will let her go to high school in Shrewsbury is if Emily surrenders her penâ??for good.

Emily almost convinces herself that she can survive without writing, especially when she catches the eye of Teddy Kent. But she can't stop herself from secretly recording all of her hilarious adventures and coming-of-age heartbreaks. When the local paper gets ahold of her writing and offers her an exciting opportunity, Emily will have to decide how much she's willing to sacrifice as she climbs towards her dreams.

This new edition lovingly restores the original, unabridged text and includes an all-new, exclusive introduction with special memories from L.M. Montgomery's granddaughter.

What Readers Are Saying:

"A spunky, mysterious, and lightly romantic read."

"There is much more to this book than anyone would expectâ??wonderful, complex characters and very subtle, sly underlying themes."

Emily never imagined Aunt Elizabeth would allow her to go to high school in Shrewsbury, and she's thrilled, especially as her close friends Ilse, Teddy and Perry will be there. But there are certain conditions: for the whole three years Emily must board with hateful Aunt Ruth, and she must promise to stop writing stories. To Emily, this is unthinkable, but she wants an education, and reluctantly agrees. With the move from her beloved home at New Moon to Aunt Ruth's house, Emily's world is turned upside down. Not only must she prove herself at school, despite rejection and jealousy, but she can no longer count on her friends. Her happy childhood friendships, especially with Teddy and Perry, start to turn into something more complicated and in a small-town, the merest hint of gossip can cause scandal.

*** SPOILERS BELOW ***

Emily is a very realistic story and girl, she has real consequences in her life and that's always nice in a book. I enjoyed the story and world as a nice break from other things.

While this is a charming book, I also find it a tad infuriating. Why do story people always insist on not taking amazing opportunities? Why would you not go to New York for a few years, become successful then when you are known and desired, move back to PEI?

WHY???

Also, I enjoyed the dig at Elsie Dinsmore ( )

My mother bought this book for me when I told her I wanted to be a writer. I love the poetry of LM Montgomery's language. She is best known for Anne of Green Gables, but I think Emily is a much better (though darker) heroine. ( )

L.M. Montgomery is a long time and all time favorite author of mine. She writes the perfect girls story with just the right mix of adventure, drama and happiness. I find her books a comfort to read and have re-read most of works many times over the years. They are classics for a reason and that reason is they are great. ( )
