Excellent story. Following the rise of a single brother of a little known chapter of the space marines accross many years and engagement encountering Dark Eldar and orks along the way this story keeps pulling you along all the way.

Dan Abnett has done it again with this excellent read. ( )

This is a collection of short stories that tie up very nicely. Main characters are members of Damocles squad of Iron Snakes Chapter. We follow them as the main character advances from the Battle Brother to full Space Marines squad commander and fights numerous foes to save humanity in the area of space Iron Snakes protect.

What I like the most is the way Marines were portrayed - more humanly then usual, using actual tactics to engage their enemies and training, training .... ever training for the future endeavors.

Some of tales feel like homage to the ancient Greek Hoplites - most likely Spartans, especially the first story - one Spartan for one conflict.

This Grecian inspired Warhammer 40K novel from Dan Abnett goes down as one of his finest. Through the eyes of our new hero Priad, we are taken through a series of short stories (although they interconnect and loop back very well) that help build the reader’s sense of the Iron Snakes as more than a fighting force but rather a true legion, similar to those of ancient Greece. In any case, the novel is full of action, suspense, blood, guts, loss and all the things we’ve come to love from military sci-fi. Without giving away too much, the battle of the five phratry’s on Ganahederak is so incredibly awe-inspiring that it goes down as one of the great moments in the annals 40K. ( )
