I don't have any expertise in RTOS's, so I cannot comment about the later chapters, but the first few chapters in this book (except that on logic gates - timeless) are really outdated. A lot has changed since 1999, and most embedded novices will not have to interface a PAL with literally anything, because nobody uses PAL anymore (to name just one outdated example).
