At the start of this story I wasn't sure if I would like the book at all. The main character was abrasive, rude, self-aggrandizing and overall felt pretty unlikable to me. However, once she encountered Albert, things seemed to change up a little. Scarlett became somewhat softer, although I still found her morals to be a bit skewed, it became a bit more tolerable.

Overall I found the story to be a well moving and interesting adventure. I do find that there were not a lot of "shades of grey" in the good vs. bad characters which made it rather predictable. I did like the slight twist with regard to the primary baddie at the end. I actually think my favorite characters were the boatman Joe and his granddaughter Ellie (hoping I remembered the names correctly!). The way post-apocalyptic England was presented was pretty cool (particularly what happened to London).

I am leaning in the direction of reading the sequel in the near future. ( )

this was a cool idea, i liked the setting an imagery and the world building. i actually thought those evolved people (i cant remember what they were called) were pretty terrifying and i like that idea. this world was sort of very bleak and depressing but not in a way thats bleak and depressing to read about, its a fun thing to read about how bleak and depressing it is ( )

I like this cover, which I assume is the U.K. one, much better than the U.S. cover, which is too silly and Hollywood-esque for such an awesome story with strong-voiced characters, an exciting, fast-paced plot, and themes of instability and a controlling ruling class set in a chaotic world (sound familiar?). As Jonathan Stroud said in an interview with Publishers Weekly (October 5, 2021), Scarlett is "fearless, indomitable, hugely capable" while Albert Browne is " hopeful, optimistic, curious and kind ... also wildly impractical." They make for a good contrast and witty dialogue. And Stroud is working on a sequel - hurray! ( )

This was a fun, lighthearted read that had me from the start - what a fabulous opening sentence! I adored Scarlett, she was such a delightful protagonist. She didn't blink when it came to killing people or robbing banks but she carried a cuss box around her neck for the few times she swore and took her prayer mat with her everywhere. Like Scarlett, Albert Browne annoyed me when I first met him but as we both grew to know him he won our hearts. His backstory was tragic.

The dialogue between Scarlett and Albert had me in stitches. Unfortunately, it petered out midway which was a shame because it was certainly the highlight of the novel. There were still glimpses in the second half but not to the same extent.

Full of action, drama and humour, I found “The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne” very engaging and I am looking forward to their next adventure. ( )
