In a spellbinding new masterpiece by #1 New York Times bestselling author Daniel Silva, Gabriel Allon undertakes a high-stakes search for the greatest art forger who ever lived

Legendary spy and art restorer Gabriel Allon has at long last severed ties with Israeli intelligence and settled quietly in Venice, the only place where he has ever truly known peace. His beautiful wife, Chiara, has taken over the day-to-day management of the Tiepolo Restoration Company, and their two young children are discreetly enrolled in a neighborhood scuola elementare. For his part, Gabriel spends his days wandering the streets and canals of the watery city, bidding farewell to the demons of his tragic, violent past.

But when the eccentric London art dealer Julian Isherwood asks Gabriel to investigate the circumstances surrounding the rediscovery and lucrative sale of a centuries-old painting, he is drawn into a deadly game of cat and mouse where nothing is as it seems.

Gabriel soon discovers that the work in question, a portrait of an unidentified woman attributed to Sir Anthony van Dyck, is almost certainly a fiendishly clever fake. To find the mysterious figure who painted itâ??and uncover a multibillion-dollar fraud at the pinnacle of the art worldâ??Gabriel conceives one of the most elaborate deceptions of his career. If it is to succeed, he must become the very mirror image of the man he seeks: the greatest art forger the world has ever known.

Stylish, sophisticated, and ingeniously plotted, Portrait of an Unknown Woman is a wildly entertaining journey through the dark side of the art worldâ??a place where unscrupulous dealers routinely deceive their customers and deep-pocketed investors treat great paintings as though they were just another asset class to be bought and sold at a profit. From its elegant opening to the shocking twists of its climax, the novel is a tour de force of storytelling and one of the finest pieces of heist fiction ever written. And it is still more proof that, when it comes to international intrigue and suspense, Daniel Silva has no eq… (plus d'informations)

An entertaining read. I enjoyed the story and the almost constant change of setting with the characters flitting from place to place. Plenty of insight into the international trade in high priced artwork. ( )

I haven't read the first 21 instalments of this series, so there was a lot of back story I wasn't privy to, but this was fine as a stand alone. There was quite an extensive cast, but I think I kept on top of the plot. I found this very readable and fun, although the good guys never really seemed to be in much danger. ( )

Gabriel Allon retired now from the Israeli service never disappoints. Old master forgery, Ponzi scheme and Allon is in the case. ( )

It has been a while since I read a book in the series, and it was good to get back. Even though I missed a good chunk of the series I didn’t feel as if I needed a refresher. As always, it was good to catch up with beloved characters.

I previously have watched several documentaries about art and wine forgeries. There’s no specific reason, it just caught my interest for a few weeks and I always felt as if both industries have become one big money laundering scam. The one that sticks out in my mind is Made You Look on Netflix, which is well worth watching.

Portrait of an Unknown Woman by Daniel Silva is a true art heist book. Unlike the other books I’ve read, this one doesn’t involve terrorism, but still involves villains and murderers out to protect their golden goose worth millions.

Both Mr. Silva and Mr. Allon freely admit that, frankly, no one knows how much fake art is out in the world. In several documentaries, gallery and museum directors flat-out admit that they have no idea how many pieces in their collections are fake (and they probably don’t want to know either).
Gabriel Allon, however, has an eye for such things.

At first, I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy the book. After all, the big attraction to the series was the international intrigue. Spymaster Allon is now retired, but danger still seems to follow him around. Gabriel Allon can certainly find trouble in the midst of a Yom Kippur service.

The book did not disappoint, as much as I love the espionage genre, it’s always the characters that make the story. This is especially true if you’re interested in heist books, art history, and, of course, art forgery. ( )
