She becomes involved in a case going back some time to her childhood, where her friends and relations played with kids who went on to be part of the criminal underworld - some escaped and some remained. Now it looks like a long-forgotten crime is being remembered by the wrong people and pressure is brought on them to do 'one more' job. Worth checking out eh beginning of the series to see how it develops I suspect this isn't the highlight. I've read some of this series but am not sure I've read all of them. It's been a while since I've read one as it took me a while to remember how V.I. ended up with Peppy and Mitch (dogs).
You wouldn't think that a young girl, a rehab/nursing home, a Jewish Synagogue, a contractor, and V.I.'s childhood neighbors would all connect, but somehow, Sara Paretsky makes it work.
This book is set during the Covid 19 pandemic (I'm not sure exactly when. Sometime after the shutdown but before nursing homes started allowing visitors again), which brought back some not so pleasant memories.
I wish we had learned what happened to Gisella and how her story turned out. (
